Speaking of birth control

For those TTA, what birth control do you use?  Do you like it?

I've been on the pill (Sprintec) for awhile and it's been fine, but the past few months I've gotten really bad about taking them at the same time every day, even though I have an alarm set on my phone.  So much so that this month we're using condoms as backup and I've had some break through bleeding.

I'm scared of the shot because I've heard it really messes with your hormones and has caused a lot of women to gain 20+ pounds.

Has anyone used the nuva ring, an iud, or something other than condoms/the pill? (I'm young and never been pregnant, so I'm not even sure I could get an iud, but thought I'd ask about it)

Thanks ladies!

Re: Speaking of birth control

  • I'm not using BC pills, so I can't speak to the different brands really well, but I'd caution against using the Nuva ring.  I've heard that it has caused more health problems than regular pills.  My cousin used to be on it and had a miserable experience, and another friend of mine had a friend from HS who died from using it.

Honestly, we've been happy charting.  It's easy, reliable, cheap, and it's helped doctors figure out what's going on with my body (hence the surgery I had a few weeks ago).  I know it's not for everyone though!

Us too. Charting isn't for everyone but for me it's easy and cheap and we'll turn it around when its time to TTC.

  • Good thought, ladies.  Not sure why it didn't occur to me.  Any recommendations/links for a newbie?

http://www.tcoyf.com/ <--- start there. I would go to the library or B&N and flip through Taking Charge of your fertility by Toni Weschler (the website I sent you is the matching site with the book). It's worth the read even if you decide not to go that route! Really informative, a lot of ladies around the boards have read it even though they weren't using charting as their birth control method.

And there is a good amount of us around here that chart, so we'd be willing to help you out with questions and stuff :)

  • This doesn't really help you, but to answer the question, I'm on Tri-Sprintec, too ;)

  • We're starting to chart this month. So we started abstaining today... I'm allergic to latex so no condoms for us. It is going to be a long couple of months.
  • I'm using the Mirena IUD. I have had it since August and I am really starting to love it. I was having major breakthrough bleeding and no pill helped. I had been on pills since I was 13 (I'm 26 now). I have not had a baby and yeah it hurt when they put it in but not as much as I would have thought. On pills I always had lowered libido and I am finally feeling normal in that aspect. My breakthrough bleeding has taken until now to even out, but I just stuck with it and it is much better. I love not having to remember to take a pill. It isn't for everyone but I am loving it.

  • I currently take microgestin FE 1/20, but all of a sudden out of nowhere I keep heavily spotting halfway through my cycle. It's annoying the crap out of me because it's almost like having a second period, and I hate having ONE period! lol DH and I are planning on TTC in around June or July, so i'm strongly considering doing the charting method instead. Just not totally sure how well that's going to work.

They make non-latex condoms, you know that right? The Brand called Skyn has a ton - they sell them in target.

Did the doctor give you a hard time about prescribing it for you?  We don't want kids for 5-7 years, but I've heard that doctors can be pretty against giving them to women who haven't had kids.

  • I chart a little differently...I use the Creighton Model which charts mucus instead of temperature, though it's still just as effective!

  • No, my doctor didn't give me a hard time, but we had tried probably 6 different pills in 2 years and nothing was taking care of the bleeding. They were actually the ones that suggested it. I did have a few tests done before they suggested it though. Make sure your insurance covers it though because it is very expensive if they don't. I only had to pay a small fee for it because they covered most of it. I would just have a talk with your doctor about it. Sounds like it might be right for you if you don't want kids right away.
  • I use birth control pills, Femcon Fe (actually now I use the generic, Zeosa). My doctor put me on this specific brand because it is supposed to have lower instances of breakthrough bleeding, but I still have problems occasionally.

Most of the times that I do get breakthrough bleeding I've noticed tend to be "user error" or when I take a pill more than a half hour late. I don't understand why that should happen after such a short time - I've just chalked it up to my body being extra sensitive to hormone fluctuations. I purchase TCOYF a few months back but haven't read it yet. My schedule is so varied that I don't know if temping at the same time everyday is right for us at this time.

  • I am on Low-esterol.... or something like that.  They've changed mine so many times that I cannot keep track of it anymore

We chart using cervical mucus and temperatures :) the TCOYF book teaches the combination of both methods.

  • I've been on Seasonique for 3 years and I really like it.  I do have some breakthrough bleeding from time to time, but the last few cycles of it have been great--no bleeding.  I was on Depo Provera (the shot) for 5 years before taking Seasonique, and it was FABULOUS.  I loved not having to remember taking a pill, and I never had bleeding issues. It did cause me to gain some weight, but for me, the benefits outweighed the negatives.  My doctor has recommended that I take Mirena, but since it's not covered by my insurance I've opted against it.  She mentioned that inserting it could be painful, and wasn't concerned that I'd never had kids.  If my insurance covered it, I would have definitely gone that route.

  • Sam--Your concern was one of the reasons why I chart the mucus, not my temperature.  It's done at the end of the day no more than 15 minutes before you go to bed.  It's much less restrictive for those who have unusual schedules like me!

  • I just switched bc pills to Aviane. It's supposed to be a generic for Alesse. Alesse was the very first bc pill I was on and it worked great. No side effects what so ever. Then the pharmacy stopped carrying it so I had to switch to another brand and I've been on several different bc pills since then trying to find one that I liked. Now that I'm on Aviane I'm pretty happy with it so far. The only side effect I notice is a headache the day I start my period, but that's happened with EVERY brand of pill I've been on and I think even before I was on the pill.

  • I've tried a couple different BC pills and contraceptives, including the ring.  I really really liked the Nuva Ring, until I stopped using it.  When I stopped I realized how raw/tender it had made me from month to month.

It was almost like I had a yeast infection (I would assume since I've never actually had a yeast infection) for the first 2-4 days after I had inserted it.  It was always right after I was off my period and when we wanted to make up for the lost time of the period week, so it was incredibly painful!

I have a lot of friends (w/o babies) who have had their doctors give them an IUD.  I don't know if this sounds bad, but you can almost always find at least one in your area that will give you one, even if yours says no.  Ask around to other friends/coworkers/classmates and see if any of them have been able to get one, I'm sure that their doctor would let you get one too.

  • I would not go anywhere near the shot (Depo or Lupron Depo) because studies are showing that it induces early menopause and osteoperosis because of the high hormonal content. I would try the ring if you are having trouble sticking to your pill. Unless you can force yourself to become very diligent about taking your pill, the ring might be your best bet. Is the time that you normally take your pill just not working out for you? You can change the time you take it.

  • I have been on tri sprintec I think the generic for ortho tri cyclen lo for YEARS. I have never had an issue. I bounced around different pills for awhile too, like yazmin and regular orthro , but I like the one i'm on now. My libido is pretty low, which is a downer, but mentally I have tried to find way around that issue (tmi lol). I have 3 more months and I want to start charting. I bought TCOYF and I started reading it. I am not sure if H wants to completely rely on that, so I'm sure we will still use condoms anyways. But I would rather not have the side effects of all the hormones anymore. I did go off the pill for a few months and it was AMAZING, so i'd like to go back to that. The only issue I have is I am so used to knowing when my period is coming, and I don't want any surprises. But charting should help with that problem.
  • I'm on trisprintec.  I like the idea of nuvaring, but I have a feeling it would be a lot more expensive than trisprintec.  I haven't looked into it much though because the plan is for DH to have a vasectomy within the year.
