Travel in March w/10 mo old...any recs?

We're wanting to go on vacation, more than likely in March. We're looking for destinations that would be doable with a 10 month old. Budget w/o airfare is about 2-3K. 7-10 days. I'm into touristy stuff, DH likes to relax, but will do museums and such. I wanted to do london and paris, but DH thinks it would be hard with DD.Any recommendations? Probably like to stick to N. America or Western Europe...we've already been to Italy.

  • I think London would be awesome with a 10 month old, why does he think it would be too difficult? You could do London and then go outside the city to some other areas, Bath, York.

We have taken our son to Portugal, Spain, Belgium, and he was born in England and traveled to Scotland as well. Anywhere in W Europe would be great.

  • Well I guess hard isn't the right word. He thinks he wouldn't be able to fully enjoy the sites b/c we'll be occupied with making sure DD is happy and content. And he just now mentioned jet lag, so I don't even know if europe will be ideal at all for him. But I'm still trying to convince him that it won't be bad.

  • London would be fine for a 10 mo but the budget might be hard. London is super expensive.

  • we live in India and traveled a lot with LO since he was 6 months old (he's 18 months now and has been on 50+ flights to over 9 countries).  We took him to London and Amsterdam, Singapore, Hawaii and San Francisco in his first year and he did pretty good.

The killer for us was the jetlag once we got home.  After our 1st trip back to the states when he was 8 months, he was up at 3 am for about 10 days, until he got back on schedule.

Other than that, yes, you'll have to tweak your travel style to adjust to traveling with a kid, but there are so many fun things to do and experience with a child that you might never have done as just a couple.  We made sure we fed our LO breakfast before we left the hotel for the morning, just so he wasn't too crabby while we went searching for cafes, etc.  Plus, he doesn't mind sleeping in the stroller or Ergo, so that made traveling to and from places during the day easier.

and I think any place with good public transportation is good for traveling with LOs.  Have fun and good luck! :)

  • I think it depends on your child. Ours sleeps awesome at home, but never naps in the stroller and so doing touristy things is very difficult. Also jet lag with her is terrible. Coming to Europe she stays up late, so you would expect to have a bedtime fight until 3am or so the first couple of nights. Can you tell I don't like traveling with her? Its not a very relaxing experience. What about doing something closer to home? Chicago, New York, Washington or Boston would all be great.

  • We took our son to Europe when he was about that age. We just put him in the stroller or the Ergo and he'd sleep while we saw the sights. We did have to make some adjustments here and there and we didn't see as much as we would have if we had been traveling without him but we still had a great time.
