Ok, this might get a little gross but I need help!
We've got a mice problem. I'm too squeamish to actually set out to kill these guys so H is "taking care of it".
I was doing the laundry this morning and I smelled something gross, I started sniffing around and I couldn't locate where this smell was coming from. So as soon as I get all the clean clothes to the dryer I notice something at the bottom of the washer. It was a dead washed up mouse! I was/am so grossed out.
Here is my question, how can I wash all my clothes to make me forget that they got washed with little mouse guts and to make sure they are clean (I can't bleach because it was my bright colors load)?
How can I safely get rid of these little guys, they are driving me crazy!
Re: Oh no! Mice invasion!
I would run a cycle in the washer, to make sure it's clean. Then, I would wash them in hot water, then again in cold water. They should be clean at that point.
Step 1. donate to Goodwill
Step 2. Buy new clothes.
Icky!! That really sucks, I hope your H is able to get it under control. I'd be calling an exterminator, myself.
I would do as lisa suggested, run a load without anything in it, then rewash the clothing in question with hot water and maybe even let it soak for a bit.
I would have freaked the eff out if that happened to me!
We've gotten mice quite a few times and I hate it! I always find mice poop in my silverware drawers which means disinfecting all my silverware.
For getting rid of the mice- we buy the round traps that the mouse goes into and then it snaps closed so we dont actually have to see the mouse. Works every time.
For re-washing your clothes, wash them in vinegar & laundry soap and then again in just a little bit of laundry soap.
Thanks for the tips guys!
You have no idea how freaked out I was when I found it, there was a lot of cuss words, stomping/flailing around and dry heaving involved.
Can I run the washer with bleach only, then the clothes?
Honestly, I would do an empty load in the washer with bleach then one more to rinse the bleach out then go back to normal washing.
Ha! Good to know. Can you tell I'm not the most domesticated person?
My parents didn't know until everything was getting back logged in the drain and the guy who came to fix it told them to run a cycle of bleach every so often

Oooh! This is something I could definitely do! Thanks.
Sorry, I did not read beyond the first sentence. I despise mice and writing this is making my skin crawl.
Family suggestion? Get the be be gun and shoot them in the eyes. (lol)
I had a mouse in my washer one too! Ew.
I also had a shrew build her home in my car when I was 16.
Call the exterminator. He'll set up traps.
We get this problem occassionally as there's new construction around me. We also have a large field behind us that over grows then gets cut.
We have the exterminator come quarterly and it works. If any problems arise in between appts, he'll come for free.
It's seriously not that expensive. I believe it's like $65/qtr
Eeeeeeek!!!!
I would freak out. You have my sympathy!
I'd probably do what everyone else mentioned -- run it with bleach, run it again without bleach, then wash your clothes like 8 times.
I'd make sure all of your food is completely sealed in strong containers. They can easily get in things like cereal boxes, chip bags, etc. and poop everywhere. After you know they're gone for good I would also clean out the cabinets and under furniture.
