Mine sucks. I think I've had the same board since college. I did get a new iron and cover for it a few years ago.
Here is my problem - my new craft room is carpeted with a really high quality, thick, cushy carpet. Honestly, I hate carpet but this is good stuff in good condition, so we aren't going to rip it out. I put down a bamboo rug on the sewing half of the room to help keep pins from getting stuck in the carpet. But this carpet makes my cheapy ironing board even more unsteady. I've knocked it over several times, the iron goes flying, etc. Wall mount won't work without rearranging the room (the ironing board is diagonal from a corner).
What kind of ironing board do you have for your sewing room? What kind of flooring do you have? Is it steady?
Do you have a thingy on the side to hold the iron? How about something to direct the iron's cord?
Re: Lets talked boring stuff - ironing boards
I have plush carpet too and a really old ironing board from who knows when that H brought with him. It has a little side rack for the iron but I never use it.
I have no problems with steadiness. My problem is the old crappy ironing board! When I try to fold it up the little pegs go on either side of the metal bars that hold it in place...if that makes any since. Makes me so angry!
Wobbly ironing board makes my toes nervous!

I know you can't do the wall mount (per the OP) but I would do the ironing table. I made one with a tutorial using a TV tray, 4 layers of quilt batting and a piece of home decorating fabric. It's pretty sturdy (I have berber though) and I can fold it up and put it away easily. My house is tiny and my sewing space is my living room, so it works well for me.
They also make things you can lay on tables (just any table, counter, etc) to use for ironing if you have a big cutting space. JoAnn's probably has them but I've seen them online at Crate & Barrel.

oooh.... an ironing table! That sounds like a good idea.
I'm too lazy to take another picture, but here is that part of the room. There is a window to the left of the ironing board (opposite the dresser), and only about 12 inches between the edge of the closet and the corner. Then another 12 inches before a big window. Then a bookcase on the other side of the window. So the ironing board kind of needs to float.
I use a table-top ironing board on the floor. Is that weird? I hate ironing, so I'll sit down with a show or movie on the ipad and get comfy and iron away. It tucks away really nicely.
I think Lilblueboo had a post about how she made her own giant ironing board/table- I'll see if I can find it...
