Is this a waste? Eating at the Mesa Grille at Atlantis in the Bahamas...
H and I are going on a cruise and one of our ports is Nassau, Bahamas. I've been reading lots of mixed reviews of this port.
I really don't know if we should take the ferry over to Blue Lagoon vs. Atlantis/Paradise Island vs. staying at Junkanoo Beach.
I know BF has his restaurant in Vegas, which we didn't get a chance at eating while we were there. We are both foodies and have been wanting to try his restaurant, and now are wondering if we should just go to the Atlantis and eat there? H thinks this is somewhat of a waste (considering we could go back to Vegas), but I really don't have a huge desire to go to Nassau, and at least this interests me.
Thoughts?
Re: Is this a waste? Eating at the Mesa Grille at Atlantis in the Bahamas...
DH and I stayed at the Atlantis in May, 2010, and ate at Mesa Grill while were were there. Honestly - I think I have to agree with your DH that it's a waste of time. The food was fine but it didn't blow me away (maybe a 6 out of 10 - nothing stands out from that meal except the corn bread, honestly), and the price was about 50% more than what you'd pay for the same meal in Vegas. Dinner for two of us with drinks set us back about $150, and you'd be paying for the cab to and from the hotel, so you're easily going to end up spending around $200 total for that (at least, that would be my guess).
As far as things to do in Nassau - there aren't a lot of great options. What cruise line are you going on? What tours do they offer? I would recommend avoiding the Atlantis (DH and I didn't like it much at all), but we did do some fun stuff while in the Bahamas - we did a swim-with-the-dolphins excursion and a GREAT snorkeling tour there. Also, the water color in the area is incredible so if you have the option to just go to a beach that might be fun. If the tours on the cruise ship are too expensive or don't interest you, check www.tripadvisor.com to see what there is in Nassau; most of the tour operators will pick you up at the port and drop you back off in time to re-board the ship (and they're probably cheaper to work with directly than going through the cruise line). HTH.
Thanks for your feedback about Mesa Grill- I also found out they aren't open for lunch anyways.
We're going on the Oasis of the Seas with Royal Caribbean, and will be at Nassau from 7a-3p. This it Day 2 of our cruise. I actually did look at the Swim with the Dolphins excursion at Blue Lagoon. Did you do the Dolphin Swim or Dolphin Encounter? I saw a video with Dolphin Encounter and while it seemed like fun, I wish we could have more interaction with the dolphin than just waiting in line with a group of people to huge/kiss/pet it. I do know it does have really good ratings on tripadvisor though...
We did the Dolphin Swim, where you jump in and swim around with them and at the end they propel you across the water (you half stand up and they use their noses to push you - like the picture on the website). H loved it - if you're going to do that type of thing, you should spend the extra money and go big, or else don't do it. I don't see how you'd enjoy just standing in the water petting the dolphin when you would see everyone else doing the more fun stuff. I think the dolphin "encounter" is for people with small children or physical ailments that would limit their ability to swim with the dolphins... but for you and H, I'd say do the swim or don't do it at all.
If you get a chance to eat at Nassau instead of Atlantis, then go to the Twin Brothers. It's amazing! I've never been able to find Conch Fritters that even compare to the ones we had there. It's more of a local place without the "resort" restaurant feel to it.
My husband and I did the Graycliff Hotel Cigar and Rum tasting and it was amazing. We received a tour of the hotel with a complimentary drink (some fruity rum drink that was amazing), a tour of their wine cellar, then we rolled our own cigars and ended with a rum tasting. It was one of the best parts of our trip. I believe they also have a restaurant there if you wanted to eat at the hotel, though we did more exploring after instead.

Pipe down, you had your chance!
we have been to nassau many times and we also have done the dolphin swim at blue lagoon. it was very fun, even though i lost my bikini bottoms on the dolphin foot push! haha. it is pricey but well worth it. They only take 10 people per "encounter" so make sure to sign up early if that is what you want.
I am a big fan of Mesa Grille in Vegas, but I wouldn't "waste" a day in the beautiful Bahamas indoors eating there.
