I feel really dumb.

and tell me that I'm not the only one who mispronounces some of these words.

I say purr-rog-a-tive, can-uh-date, sher-bert, and ofTen. I've never used the phrase "for all intents and purposes," but I would have had no idea that was right. And, since when is snuck not a word?

Am I dumb? I graduated magna *** laude twice. Is the quality of education in Alabama really this poor, or do other people not know this stuff?

Re: I feel really dumb.

  • I say most of those correctly except prerogative. Idk why but up until now I had no idea there was a R after the P. I feel dumb.

  • First I'm going to toot my own horn and say the only one I mispronounce is "purr ? ogg ? uh ? tiv". Yay me!

I don't think it means your dumb. I think the mispronunciation has more to do with dialect than intelligence. The South says things differently than the North-East which say things differently than the Midwest, which is totally different than the West Coast. Different emphasis on vowels or silencing consonants, Cr-ee-k vs. Cr-i-ck, All-mond v. Al-mand, etc. While there might be an ultimately correct "English" way of saying something, if everyone in your area pronounces it the same, you'd probably look more dumb saying it right, KWIM?

I agree with this part.  Also I use "for all intents and purposes" all the time, but its basic contract language so I think that if you're not in some type of "business" role you probably wouldnt ever say it.

    I mispronounce prerogative too.

I've also noticed lately that in my area, we dont use the words "to be" a lot. For instance, we say "The car needs washed." rather than, "The car needs to be washed." I've been trying to make a conscious effort to speak/write correctly.

  • You all really say sher-bet?! I've never heard anyone pronounce it that way. Everyone in Alabama would look at me like I had 2 heads if I said that.

Where's Ames? I guarantee people in Arkansas don't say that.

  • Well I live in NY and always have and I say Sher-bert.

  • I really do say Sher-bet.

I hate when people make the h in certain words silent.  Like huge becomes YEW-ge.

Sherbet is sher-bert. Orange sherbert. Yum.

I also mispronounce prerogative, prescription, utmost, candidate, and I really thought it was "for all intensive purposes."

    I'm country, y'all.

ETA: people who say nu-cu-ler drive me insane. it happens all the time here.

  • The  only one I say is purr-o-gative too.  I just think pre-rog-a-tive is difficult and unnecessarily complicated for my mouth.

That said, my mom specifically raised us to pronounce things correctly and will still correct me if she thinks I'm saying something improperly.

Sherbet is my BFF's favorite word to correct people on, she's been doing it since we were little, so I def pronounce that the right way.

This is exactly why I say it correctly too. My mom and sister corrected me all.the.time when I was little.

I have to admit, some of those pronunciations I'm having difficulty saying even with the phonetic break down. Honestly, "can ? uh ? dett" doesn't even make sense. But thats just me; I'm not trying to say anything against people who pronounce it that way.

  • I never really realized it was sher-bet, not sherbert.  Whoops.

And now I have bobby brown in my head.....
