hiring help

i hired a maid to come and clean before christmas. first time and we've been in the house for a year. now i'm thinking of having her come once a month, just to get to all that hardcore cleaning that takes me all weekend.  not the everyday things like laundry, dishes, kitchen. i do all that myself, but the other stuff - moving the furniture and vacuuming, mopping all the floors, dusting everything, bathrooms & showers. i feel guilty spending the $, but dh and i are always working, and when we have to spend all weekend cleaning it sucks. meanwhile i have school work to do on the weekends, and between that and cleaning i get no free time. dh is all for relaxing on the weekends, leaving the place a mess, and saving the $, but i can't and i just end up cleaning it myself and ruining my weekend. anyone have cleaning help? do you find it worth it?

Re: hiring help

  • I have someone clean once/week and it's the best money I spend. I still end up doing a little here & there and do all the laundry, but it's so worth it to not have to touch the bathrooms & mop the floors. I definitely don't miss scrubbing toilets :-D

  • If you can afford it I think it's a wonderful.  We don't have the money for it (and I'm a SAHM), but I would love for someone to come mop and clean the showers (my least favorite chores).  I can't imagine how much it would suck to work all week and spend your weekend cleaning, with that schedule when do YOU get time for YOU and your DH?
  • When I was in grad school (and also working full time) we did this. It's wonderful. We had a team come in every other week. Just make sure they are bonded and insured, which protects you in the event of injury or damage.

  • DH and i used to clean the entire house every other saturday when we were first married.  it ruined every other saturday.  it was so stressful after a whole week of hard work to have to spend the whole day cleaning.  we decided after a while to hire a cleaning company, and we have never looked back.  we have maids come in every other week and clean everything.  we still do the dishes and the laundry, but they do everything else.  we NEVER fight over chores.  it is one of the best decisions we've ever made.  and seriously, if money were tighter than it is, i think we would let many other luxuries go before getting rid of maid service.  it is so worth it.
