Do you own a gun?

For protection reasons?

My mom and I were talking the other day and some news stories came up. One of them was the 18 year old mom who shot a guy breaking into her house. I told my mom these things make me really nervous about this summer when Aiden and I will be living on our own. She said I should get a gun. I have never shot a gun before in my life. Of course I would take classes but I'm still not sure of the idea. I keep thinking that by time I put the gun and stored it where Aiden would not be able to get it, it would take too long for me to get it in an emergency. Any thoughts?

Re: Do you own a gun?

  • The idea of having a gun in the house scares me more than the thought of sleeping in a house alone with the kids, but I'm very gun-averse.  I think you should do what you feel comfortable.  Even if all the gun provides you for practical purposes is peace of mind, it could be worth it.  Just make sure to take the safety classes and store it safely, of course (as I know you would)!
  • H has mentioned getting a gun and I am NOT into it.  He has convinced me of things in the past though (we are currently Verizon Fios subscribers after years of me protesting) so we may have one someday.  But it wouldn't be until I have lots of shooting range experience and gun knowledge.  And I won't like it.

This makes me think of the single mother in OK who shot and killed a home intruder on NYE while on the phone with 911.  The operator told the girl to do whatever she had to do to protect herself so she did.  The news interviewed the girl and she said "there is nothing more dangerous than a mother and her child" and I thought about framing that quote :)

  • Yes, I have a gun. I was completely against them when my husband first brought up the idea, but honestly I am happy that I have it now. Especially since I am home alone with Lila a lot. I am considering getting a conceal and carry permit as well. Not that I would carry it with me all of the time, just to have the option if I ever felt the need to carry it with me.

There was recently a guy going around Spring Hill/Brooksville trying to convince women to come to the back of his van & begging for money. It happened to 2 of my neighbors (neither one called the police) and then I read about it happening to at least 20 other women on a Spring Hill FB sell/swap page. Not one single person called the police when this man approached them, so it continued to happen. They finally just arrested him last week when he approached a girl who had pulled over on the side of the road to get her cell phone charger out of the back of her car. He punched her in the face and tried to steal her purse.

I am very aware of my surroundings but there are some times that I feel unsafe and would like the extra protection. It makes me nervous to have a gun in the house with a child, even locked in a safe, but I would rather have it there if I need it, than wish I did if something were to happen.

  • I agree with you. I'd be so nervous about having a gun in the house, it would be in the most inaccessible place. I would never be able to get to it fast enough. I think a security system would be a better investment.
There has been more than one occasion when someone from my neighbor's drunken party walked into our house. Shame on us for not locking the doors. I spent more time staring at the guy & trying to figure out what was going on. Had he been a robber, there's no way I could have accessed a locked up gun. It would have made more sense to run out the door.

  • I am not a fan of guns at all, but we have them in our house.  For the most part I ignore then, LOL.

We HAVE to have a gun in our house due to my H's job.  He can't really go to work without a weapon, ha.  But in addition to his service weapon we have about 10 shotguns.  My H uses them regularly when he hunts so at least they are being put to good use.

I have shot a gun before but it's not really my cup of tea.  The only thing I effectively know how to do is to rack a shot gun, which is known as the universal language for "get the eff outta my house before I shot your head off".  But that being said the shot guns are never loaded and I think the shells are stored outside in our barn so if I needed to shot the gun I would be SOL.

But all of our guns are locked up 100% of the time.  Currently we are looking to buy a steal enclosed safe because the current gun safe we have has a glass front door, which the potential for Macy to break it scares the shiit out of me.

holy sh*t. where did that happen? How do I not hear about these things.

ETA: whoa! I found it in Hernando Today! That is crazy! There are a lot of panhandlers in spring hill. I see the same ones every day on county line/mariner & county line/19. I have been approached before in the best buy parking lot, oh and there is one always sitting in the parking lot of publix across from walmart/bestbuy.

  • Yes, we have guns. 2 hand guns, a rifle & 2 shot guns. I think they are all loaded. Chris takes one hand gun w/ him while he travels out of town, the other is in the bedroom where I can access it very easily.

I've been to the gun range twice and shot about 200 rounds through one of our hand guns. the other one I won't use (which is the one chris takes with him). I don't particularly like having them all, but they were Chris' (all but one) before we met, so I just deal with it.

Yes, crazy right? It's unbelievable that he was able to get away with it so many times before someone finally called the police... but it took her getting punched in the face and being robbed in the street. He has stood in front of cars while women were trying to pull away from pumps and everything.

There are crazies out there and I would rather be "safe" than sorry.

  • Oh, and one other difference between Florida and Texas......

I don't know of one single household in Texas, through all the people I meet, who don't have a gun in their house.  Like, every.single.person.I.know.here. has a gun in there house.  And when ever we go out hunting (although I haven't tagged along in years) there are even five year old kids with guns.  Sounds crazy but the kids are brought up knowing how to respect a gun and all the safety rules that are associated with them.  But that being said, I would be reluctant to let Macy hunt when she is 5 years old.....

However, in Florida I would say it's not the same.

  • We do not own a gun and I don't think it will ever be something we would consider.

  • I guess I am the different one in this thread because yes we have guns and yes I know how to shoot them.  While I wasn't always comfortable having them around at first when H and I got married, once I took the time to learn how to use them I was fine.  I don't like having a gun around that I haven't shot at least once.  H and I actually enjoy going shooting together.  I first learned how to shoot from my grandfather and my uncles who all served in the military and I probably first shot a gun around 8 or 10 years old.  If you have or are going to have a gun then you need to know how to not only shoot it but handle it, load it, disarm it, store it, and care for it.

That is the story my mom and I were talking about. It scares me to think of myself in that situation and not being able to do anything. But at the same time I and so afraid of Aiden getting to it. I heard a 911 call about 6 months ago from a boy (about 13 or so) crying on the phone bc he shot his best friend in the head. At leats I have a while to research everything I need to know. Thanks ladies!

  • I don't have a gun, but I don't like the idea of having one, and I have no idea how to shoot a gun.

Since guns aren't really an option in my mind, I have to say that I do feel better since we got an alarm system, especially on the weekdays that I'm home with Lily by myself. I also know all my neighbors, and they know us. (Not in a nosy way, but in a good way if that makes any sense.)

If you're in the market for an alarm system, I have a recommendation for you. Wink

I grew up in Ft. Worth and my family didn't have a gun (that I knew of.) Also I don't remember any friend's families having guns.  Of course they might have had them for hunting. It just wasn't a big deal I guess.

That being said,  I don't own a gun nor do I plan to.

  • I will never own a gun.  We have a big dog and an alarm system and I feel safe being home alone with both of those things.
    CLN born 4/2/11
  • I own a gun. It is loaded in a drawer Bean cannot reach and the safety is on. My dad bought me a safe for Christmas, and when we move into the new place it will go in there. If it makes you nervous, you should go to a class and learn about them (I would go with you!!). I don't think it is a necessity to have a gun, but I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
  • I don't own a gun and have no intention of ever owning a gun.

I think having an alarm system, a dog, or a taser are all alternative gun options that would make me feel safer if I felt unsafe.

  • When I first moved out from my parents, I used to tell my dad that I wanted to keep a chainsaw under my bed. If a robber came in & I whipped that out, I'm sure he would think I'm one crazy biitch & get the *bleep* out of there. :-)

Haha! This is what I tell H all the time: more than likely, someone who is entering your house isn't willing to lose -their- life. If you're the one pointing the gun first, chances are you won't even have to shoot it. Or chainsaw. Whatever your preference is. :P

  • No, I am terrified of guns. With Zoe in the house, I am even more terrified. I am most terrified of her going to a friends house where the parents haven't locked up their gun(s) properly. Not everyone is responsible about such things. :(

Well, maybe this should be phrased as more of a country vs city thing.  Dallas seems like such a world away from South Texas, LOL.  Like two different countries.

I tell you, South Texas is a place like no other, haha.

  • For me personally, I cannot even imagining owning one. No one in my family does, no one in H's family does, it's just not something that's ingrained in any of us. I have never shot a gun. H has but he wouldn't want us to have one. But one of his best friends is all for it and is always telling us we should get one :p
