Can someone explain diaper cake to me?

My SIL made a "diaper cake", but it's a tricycle similar to this one:

image

This is her current facebook status:

If you give a diaper cake as a gift make sure the new mom knows what it is. Mom-to-be had no idea what it was a just ripped the entire thing apart. Leaving just a pile of ribbons & diapers on the table. I was sooooo bummed :(

All these people are replying in like "OMG 0 how to you not know what a diaper cake is??? Duh!!"

....and now I'm totally confused. Is this not just a cute way to give diapers? Aren't you supposed to cut it apart?? I don't want to ask her b/c she's obviously annoyed at the situation, but can someone clue me in? What else are you supposed to do with the thing? Just have it sit there??

  • It's just a creative way to give diapers/spit up rags. I think she's more upset that it was torn apart at the shower, and not cooed over and praised and made into the center of attention. (I've seen it happen.. the creator spent more time whining about it being torn apart than a pregnant woman having morning sickness)
  • Oh, okay. I was wondering if there was something I was missing, but no, it's just diapers. Got it.

  • I think the whole point is for it to be oooed and ahhed over at the shower and disassembled at a later date.
  • Yeah they are for decoration at the shower. No point in dissembling them right there. I've made a couple before and used them as center pieces for showers, not just as a gift to give.

  • Sometimes people use a wine bottle in the center to hold I all up. Was mom-to-be looking for the wine? Ha
  • Never mind. I'm dumb. I forgot you said I was a tricycle. The wine bottle thing would only work for a cake shaped diaper-cake.
  • not a dumb question because i wouldn't have understood the fb status either. but i also don't think i would have dismantled it at the shower since you can pretty much see what's all there usually. it's not something that necessarily would need to be unwrapped. but i can see if she wanted the thing to be a centerpiece she would be bummed. that does look like it took awhile!
Me:39 Dx LPD, Fibroid, AMA and all that goes with that. H:37 Dx low motility and low morphology. TTC since 3/12. Clomid 8/12 and 9/12: BFN. 11/12 on a break for Myomectomy sched. 11/26. Resume TTC early 2013.
  • Those are nice. I wouldn't disassemble the thing in the party. I could see why she's upset. Maybe the girl tought there was something more in it.
