Help with the Outer Banks

We are looking to try the Outer Banks for the first time this year in August.  I have been researching it but need some help.  It seems like all of the houses are large ( we only have four people and a baby) and it seems like the inside of every house I have seen is very outdated.  Are there any newer/nicer looking places?  I know what I'm looking for probably doesnt exist but I figured i'd give it a shot over here,  you girls always seem so helpful.  We don't need to be by a lot of activity, just want to be close to a nice beach.  Thanks so much

Re: Help with the Outer Banks

  • Most of the houses are on the larger size, especially the oceanfront ones. . It also depends on what areas of the outer banks you are lookiing into. There are some towns like Atlantic Beach where you can find a decent smaller condo on the beach.  I just booked a house in Duck through twiddy.com. I also used the forums on tripadvisor too to help me.

  • heres the link to my parents vacation house in the OBX, that they rent out through sun realty

its on hatteras island, in the town of avon. hatteras island is part of a national seashore, so there are parts of it that are preserved with nothing but opened beach... BUT, the the town of avon where my parents are- theres a big grocery store, lots of restaurants, jet ski rentals, mini golf, its a short ride to the hatteras lighthouse to see that... theres a nice beach area on the bay side not too far, thats great if you have toddlers.

my parents house is one back from the ocean, so its an easy walk over the dunes to the beach. its a nice size- big, but not HUGE. 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms... they have a nice game room with ping pong table, etc. it has a hot tub, and they just finished updating 2 of the bathrooms- they are always doing things to fix it up :-)

let me know if you have any questions about the OBX, or about the house :-)

  • We stayed at this house in Kill Devil Hills over NYE: http://www.outerbanksvacations.com/rental/house.html?ID=162

I'm not sure how fancy of a place you're looking for but it's pretty nice/modern by beach house standards, and it's right on the ocean.  We were a group of six adults and it was the perfect size for us (master bedroom with bath on the top floor, three bedrooms/two bathrooms on the second floor).

  • Thanks for the responses.  I will look into all of  your suggestions.  Its hard planning a trip to a new place  when  I don't know anything about the area.
