Proper dress for women in UAE
Anyone know? I'll be going there for a while, and I want to make sure I dress appropriately. Obviously I won't be wearing anything sleeveless, revealing, or tight, but in terms of sleeve length, pants, etc., what are the rules? Thanks!
Re: Proper dress for women in UAE
I wear jeans and v-neck tshirts on a daily basis and capri cargo pants in the summer. As long as you're not in spaghetti straps and short shorts you're good to go. Some of my friends wear sleeveless tanks (the ones with the thick straps) but I feel a little uncomfortable wearing that since people stare. The only place I'd feel comfortable wearing something like that is in a hotel.
So anyway, as long as you have sleeves (even a little cap sleeve) and I'd say at least bermuda length shorts, then you'll be fine. I'm speaking for Dubai though and you should probably err on the side of conservative in the other Emirates.
This is an example of a shirt I wear on a daily basis:
Old Navy Shirt
Showing knee is ok in Dubai (I can't speak for other Emirates) and I would wear them a few inches past your fingertips but yes, bermuda length is ok.
I also wear Old Navy flip flops almost every day but you should wear whatever is comfortable to you. Sneakers are ok as well but it will be obvious that you're American.
Also okay to show knee in Abu Dhabi but not much shorter than that. Sandals and flip flops are generally fine for women. My DH was once not allowed to enter a restaurant because he was wearing flip flops, but they let me in even though I had them on too!
Short sleeves or cap sleeves are fine, and you see women there wearing tank tops from time to time but it's local custom to keep shoulders covered. Err on the conservative side as far as cleavage. If you're going out like to a bar or club, you can wear sleeveless shirts in many such places and just bring a pashmina to wrap around you for the taxi ride over.
On the beach, you can get away with anything pretty much (bikinis etc) as long as you're not, you know, naked.
I never went to Sharjah but from what I've heard you are expected to wear long sleeves and long pants there. It's the most conservative of the emirates.
Contrary to what many people believe, women to not have to wear head scarves in the UAE unless they are in a mosque.
