s/o NYC airports

m+jm+j member
I read the posts below re: JFK vs. LaGuardia.  Everyone I spoke with told me that I should fly Jetblue to JFK for the easiest experience.  I have thousands of miles on Southwest and can fly to LaGuardia for nothing, but I was taking everyone's advice.  Now I'm wondering if they were wrong!  We are flying in to New York, renting a car at the airport and driving to Bear Mountain State Park for a wedding where we will stay for three nights.  Then we will drive back to the airport to return the car and take a shuttle to our Manhattan hotel where we will be staying for 4 nights.  Just to complicate things, we will have my toddler with us.

Re: s/o NYC airports

  • if you look at a map, LGA is the closest to manhattan. for me, JFK was only more convenient when we lived further out in queens (and thus closer to JFK than LGA).

  • If you are going north to Bear Mountain, I would definitely recommend LGA over JFK.

  • What about Newark Airport, is that an option for you?

Newark is an option, the problem is that we are heading from the airport to bear mountain in a rental car, then we plan to turn the rental car back in at the airport and get a shuttle to our Manhattan hotel.  My thought was that it would be more important to be close to Manhattan to make shuttle options easier but I'm open to suggestions.  For Bear Mountain we'll rent a car so the airport location isn't a huge deal.

  • If you're going to Bear Mountain, a flight into Stewart/Newburgh would be the easiest, since it's right off of I-87.
  • lga is closer to bear mountain (jfk and lga really aren't that far apart though traffic willing-only about 20 minutes or so) as it's on the north side of queens and you can get basically right on the grand central, go across the triborough (or RFK) bridges, and end up on the deegan (which is I87) so it's a snap from LGA. which shuttle are you taking to the hotel from LGA? a hotel shuttle? if that's the case then do LGA.

It's actually really easy to get from Newark airport to Manhattan.  You can either take a shuttle as you mention you plan on doing, or you can take an NJ Transit train into Penn Station (there's a train station at the airport)

We were going to book a private transfer because we may need a car seat for my son (not sure if we're bringing ours yet).

Thanks everyone this is really helpful.  I think we may just do LGA.

212-777-7777 car service can probably bring one for you.

honestly though if you're going to be renting a car and hten getting a shuttle why not just bring yours?
