Downton Abbey episode 3 season 2 spoilers

What do you think of Thomas being manager of Downton Abbey? I don't know if he's changed that much to trust him. He still creeps me out.

Edith doing something hateful or hurtful one episode and then something noble the next. I just feel annoyed now when I see her. Maybe she's just feels stuck as the middle child and doesn't know who she is. Like her conversation with Cybil about feeling useless like a spare part.

My heart just sank for Lang. Poor guy, how many guys had PTSD but didn't or couldn't get help  during WWI & WWII? I looked into H's ancestry in the past and I found out during WWI his maternal grandfather enlisted and his paternal grandfather was drafted. His father enlisted for WWII.  H said that one of the benefits to enlist was to be able to pick what branch of the military to join.           I wonder how many guys were split back then on the war/s?

  • I agree with you about Thomas.  He hasn't changed at all.  From being a huge coward and purposefully getting injured to leave the war, to thumbing his nose at Carson.  No good will come of this.

I don't like the uncomfortableness between Cora and Matthew's mother.  They really seem to come to blows in the next episode so we'll see.

I thought it was so admirable of Mary to stick up for Levinia like that and to not throw her under the bus.  I like her as a more sympathetic character.

  • I like that they're making Thomas and O'Brien more complex characters.  They are definitely out for themselves, but both have more depth (like Thomas bonding with the blind soldier last episode and talking about how being "different" kept him isolated, etc., and O'Brien in this episode drawing the line on hurting Lady Grantham).  And honestly, I'm surprised that people are giving Thomas so much flak (excuse the pun) for injuring himself to get out of the war.  I can't even imagine what that situation would be like, and as Lang and the cook (I need to get her name in my head!) are illustrating, I think you have no idea how you will act when your life is at stake, especially for people in the trenches who often felt that their lives were being sacrificed meaninglessly.

I feel bad for William...I know the cook means well, but this isn't good for either William or Daisy.  I think they are doing a great job of showing how the war is affecting everyone at Downton, even those who would seem insulated from the effects.

Poor Lang.  I was really worried that we would hear a gunshot as soon as Carson shut the door.  That guy who plays him is a damn fine actor.

I still don't get why Mary turned Matthew Crawley down.  She supposedly loved him, he had pretty good chances of inheriting Downton, and even if he didn't inherit he was still relatively wealthy and her brother would inherit, so she would likely be very well provided for.  There was all that talk about her having to confess her indiscretion with the Turkish diplomat, and I could understand if some conflict between them arose from that, but then she never even did it.  It just didn't make sense to me, and honestly I have no sympathy for any pining she is doing now, because she had love in her hands and tossed it away.

She's definitely showing a lot of character growth in dealing with Lavinia, but I can't get past the poor logic of her past decision.

I really liked that the chauffeur was just going to throw slop at the bigwig -- I was convinced he had assassination in mind too!
