Experiences with RSV?

Hi ladies.  Last Thursday, we noticed Sawyer had a cough.  It was just a random thing, and very infrequent, but then over the weekend, it progressed into a full-blown cold.  Today, I took him to the pedi, and he was diagnosed with a double ear infection and RSV (he's also got two molars starting to cut through the skin, poor kid).  He was prescribed an antibiotic for the ear infections, and we're just watching the RSV.  We were told what to watch for and I know the basic things we can do to alleviate some of his symptoms (Tylenol/Motrin, humidifier, fluids, etc.), but I was just wondering what others experiences were w/toddlers & RSV.

Sawyer has been acting really needy & run-down the last couple of days, and you can tell he really doesn't feel well, but tonight is the first night we've run into any sleeping problems.  He's been in bed since about 8:30, and he's woken up crying 3 times already.  I know his throat hurts, but it seems like he's kind of having problems coughing.  His breathing is congested, but otherwise normal, but it's almost like he has to build himself up to cough.  I'm hoping it's just because it hurts so he's afraid to do it or something.  I'm just really worried; this stuff is scary!  Did anyone's LOs seem to do this w/RSV or similar colds/viruses?  What about things that seemed to help your LO feel better?  We tried a 1/2 tsp of honey for a natural cough suppressant tonight, but didn't notice any type of difference.  Anything work for anyone that I might not be thinking of?

And one last question (I know, this is becoming a book)... About how long did your LOs symptoms last?  I know it can take quite some time to completely recover from RSV, but I'm wondering how long the really sick part lasts?  I just feel so bad for my little guy.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

Re: Experiences with RSV?

  • No advice.  Just hope he feels better quickly! And that the sleep issues are easily resolved.
  • All of my girls have had RSV.  Hannah had it the worst but she was only 2 months old and she had to be hospitalized.  The other girls basically just had a bad cold.  We did the humidifier and thats about it.  It lasted about a week.  It gets the worst around days 3-5 and then will get better but they had warned us that it would get worse.  The main thing to watch for is labored breathing.  FX that Sawyer gets better soon!
  • Hope Sawyer feels better soon! My niece had RSV a while ago and I remember it being a rough time for all the in the family...

  • Me!! I just went through this with a two week old baby! Jameson came home to get a cold from his big sister who had a double ear infection and regular cold. It turned into something nasty for J and we were almost hospitalized...instead I had to go to the pedi DAILY (at a $25 copay...) for TWO WEEKS! (except Christmas day!) We had to buy a nebulizer and do treatments at home every two hours. That helped a lot, also taking him in the bathroom, shutting the door, and running a really hot shower. He wouldn't lay down, had to be held straight up at all times because he was so congested. Good luck! Mention a nebulizer to your pedi, they are $40 without insurance covering it, so very worth it! I hope he feels better soon!

  • Thanks, guys.  So far, today looks like more of the same, but I'm really hoping he'll start to feel at least a little better soon.  I feel so bad for him!  He hasn't really been wheezing which is why they didn't prescribe albuterol or the nebulizer, so as long as that stays at bay, we'll hopefully be able to avoid the return visits (other than our 2 week follow-up appointment).

For now, though, I guess all I can do is enjoy the extra cuddles since they're something my normally wild child doesn't usually have time for.  Haha!
