passport name change questions

Hi All,

So my visa and passport are both still in my maiden name. My visa is expiring in June and my company is renewing it, but I would like for it to be in my married name - which would mean my passport being updated to my married name as well.

From what I saw on the passport website, I need to send them my passport, the application form and a certified copy of our marriage certificate and this can be expedited - which we require as we have several trips planned.

So my questions are -

1) Has anyone dealt with the office and having this expedited? How long did it take? Or how long can I expect it to take?

2) Can I just go to the US embassy here in London and have it done?

3) Is there anyway around having to physically send them my passport?

TIA!

I don't see why it would be an issue to have it expedited. I would be surprised if they could do it same day at the Embassy. And you do have to send them your passport, they have to mark it invalid.

  • I know for a fact that they cannot do it the same day at the embassy.  I got a new passport last year and they told me all passports are send back to the US to be printed.

Mine took 3 days total.  Flew one, printed, flew back the next, I picked it up.  I did not pay extra for this it's just how long it took.  I would guess they have mail that goes to the US everyday, so it just went in that bag.

  • Thanks NCV2 - just the info I was looking/hoping for! I take it you told them you needed it expedited?
  • I did not tell them it needed to be expedited.  I was going to have it sent to my work since there would be no one at home to sign for it.  However I sent it off too late, I forget.  So it ended up being over break.  I picked it up in person and went to the Indian House to get a visa for India.  I forget the details for me picking it up in person TBH.

I do recall chatting to the person about the process and they said they are printed in the US due to all the security in the passport.  Mail comes and goes each day.

So I sent it from a post office and it arrived the next day at the embassy.  They sent it to the US that day.  It was printed the next day and I would guess flew back that night and arrived the next day in the post.  I picked it up the following day I think.

  • The London embassy processed my passport renewal because my passport was damaged. I brought in a copy of my upcoming travel itinerary and they made sure I had it ahead of that date.
  • Depending on things, you can also travel with your passport in your maiden name but you'd have to carry your marriage certificate with you as well while traveling.

Then depending on how long you'd be staying (I'm assuming in the U.S.) for a visit you may be able to do it while you were at "home".

I'm kinda in the same position. I hate to send my passport away because what happens if I'd need to travel for a family emergency before I got my passport back.. ugh.

  • Thanks for all the info ladies!

johlise, my current passport is in my maiden name - as is my UK Visa. I have been travelling with that for nearly 2 years. My issue is needing to get the passport returned in my married name prior to April, so I can get my visa renewed in my married name as well. I only go to the US for xmas holidays so that is not a possibility. We have several European and northern African weekend trips planned, so there is whe the travel issue comes in. :)

     Thanks!
