Ocean City, NJ

Can anyone tell me whether it's better to be at the North or South end of the boardwalk in OC?  We are renting a house for a little family reunion, and have 2 kids and a toddler.  Just want to make sure we are in a family friendly place, but I don't really know about the area.

Re: Ocean City, NJ

  • Ocean City is dry, so you won't have the usual behavior issues of other boardwalk towns.  Try this site:

  • The whole thing is family friendly, so that's not so much of a worry.

There's a surfing beach around 5th St., and between about there and about 12th or 13th St., it's pretty crowded and busy.  That's where the majority of the places to eat, etc. are, and where most day trippers go.  Around 14th-18th St. or around 1st St. are less busy, and have more residents, so I like those.  The beach is wider around 15th St. than 1st, so there's a little more space to spread out.

I used to lifeguard on the beach on the north end.  I miss those days.

  • Do you know anything about St. James Place on the North end?  That's where the house is that we're looking at.  Just want to make sure it's a decent area with an ok beach.

  • St. James is nice.  It doesn't have its own lifeguard stand (they're kind of every-other) but Stenton Place's stand is right there.  There are bathrooms and a lifeguard headquarters at 1st St., so proximity to that can be nice.  It puts you on the very, very end of the boardwalk, so you can get to it, but don't have the hustle & bustle.

There are rock jetties between the beaches up at the north end, but that never really bothered me.
