Chichen Itza from Playa Del Carmen Tour Safety?
We are going to Mexico tomorrow and have nothing planed besides relaxing on the beach. But now I?m thinking since this is the first time we?ll be in Mexico and possibly the last vacation for a while it would be nice to see some culture.
My question is how safe do you think the 2.5 hour drive from Playa de Carmen to Chichen Itza would be? My husband?s co-worker told him it was a pretty scare drive through many rough parts of the county. I know Mexico is pretty shaky right now but I thought that was more towards the Mexican/American boarder cities not in the touristy parts, am I wrong?
Should we stay at the hotel or should be take a chance and see some culture?
Any information would be appreciated

'rough parts' doesnt automatically mean because of drug issues. actually the towns you go through aren't rough or shaky at all imo. just regular non-resort mexican towns.
personally i wouldn't do it as i dont speak spanish very well and dont want to get pulled over etc....ive done CI as part of a group and it was great.
if you want to go and see it book the tour through your resort.
Right! That?s what we would do, book a tour. Not rent a car for the day and go off on our own. Thank you very much for your input!
We drove ourselves from PDC. There were some parts kinda shady, but not too bad. No one came up to our car or anything. What about taking an organized tour? The hotel should be able to arrange something for you. It's a long day so if you go, get up early and get there before the crowds.
Other options are to go to Coba or Tulum, both are significantly closer than CI.
if you do this you will be fine. The first time I went to PDC I rented a car and drove, the second time I did a tour through our resort. Both were fine, but it you are nervous, do the tour. Being scared was the last thing on my mind. Nothing "rough" at all. It is beautiful to go to Chichen Itza! If for some reason you feel unsafe or do not want to spend as much, you can also go to Tulum from the resort, it is much closer and just as beautiful (right on the ocean, as opposed to Chicen Itza).

I also drove to Chichen Itza myself (with two other women) from Tulum about two years ago without issue. It was very easy and we were never pulled over. However, if driving makes you nervous, definitely sign up for a tour. You don't want to miss seeing the site! It's incredible! Also, try to find a tour that includes an actual guide to the site. We didn't have one and I regretted making that decision!
