So my next question...

...is how did you keep your pregnancy a secret from your work?  I was told when I made my appointment that my first appointment will be approximately 2 hours.  And I looked up how many appointments are to come, and I'm just thinking that it is going to become obvious when I am leaving work to go to the doctor so many times.  That, and if/when I start to experience some of the more unpleasant symptoms like morning sickness.  So what did you tell your boss/co-workers?

Re: So my next question...

  • I couldn't. My MS was so bad that I had to tell them. Although, I didn't just tell everyone - only my immediate managers and a few close coworkers.
  • I was lucky in that it wasn't too hard for me. I had just started a new job and definitely wanted to keep it quiet at least until the end of the 1st trimester, and was able to do so. My doctor's office does evening appointments, so I would try to schedule those whenever possible, and if I had to schedule something during the day I would try to do it at lunch hour and just take a long lunch. It's a lot of appointments in total, but usually just once a month for regular appointments at the beginning and then ultrasounds, so it really didn't seem that frequent, and I told them after 3 months anyway.

I was also lucky that although I felt like death (tired and nauseous) through the whole first tri, I wasn't actually throwing up or anything. Either way, my desk is sort of isolated (and near the bathroom) so I could feel awful relatively privately.

  • I just told them last week. They had no clue. I didn't have any morning sickness, so I'm sure that helped hide it. My work is very flexible & easy going about taking time off though. I would say I'd have an appointment & would be back ASAP. Or try to make my appointments first thing in the morning or as late as possible.

Yeah, I was thinking lunch-time appointments.  That would be nice if I can do evening appointments, will have to look into that.  And yeah, my office is quite small and I'm farthest from the bathroom...ugh.  Should be interesting.

  • I told my work after the 2nd apppointment when we heard to heartbeat. I only told my immediate manager and my supervisor friend. We handle a lot of heavy bags when guests are still in their meetings and I didnt want to look like I dont want to help when really im just being careful. I also had bad morning sickness so I had to let them know incase Im running late for work or have to disappear when I do get sick.

  • I was promoted and transferring within the company around my 12 week mark. I told my "old" and new supervisor at about 9 weeks. We had ultrasound and I wanted to make sure my new supervisor was aware before I actually started.

  • When I told my boss he said, i sort of thought you might be, you've had a lot of Dr. appts lately.  So I guess I didn't do a great job of hiding it!

  • I told my supervisors immediately because there are certain patients I can't take care of while pregnant. I also told  couple other people so they knew that I wasn't just being lazy when I asked them for certain things. I didn't have any m/s or anything, but it would've been really hard to hide because the bathrooms are right next to the nurses stations and you can hear if someone is puking. Luckily that wasn't the case and most people  didn't even know I was KU until I was about 14 weeks. My biggest fear was that someone would out us on FB before our families knew (we wanted to tell them in person). One of my coworkers is from the Czech Republic and people at work posted about her pregnancy on her wall before she had the chance to tell her family over there. It was an innocent mistake because word travels fast at my job and the Facebook disclaimer may have been lost in translation.

  • In your environment, I would wait until 12 weeks.  You don't want to untell AND they should know the legal ramifications of asking you about doctor's visits, taking time off that you are owed, etc.

Yeah, I was planning to wait until 12 weeks, just worried about experiencing morning sickness while I'm at work and what not.

  • I told my work pretty early because I felt like crap, and unfortunately when you are a teacher you basically have to be "on " all the time.  My students and my coworkers noticed me not being myself and I told them around 8 weeks after I had my first sonogram (I had one at 7 weeks to confirm pregnancy).  Luckily at about week 14 I started feeling a lot better.
