  • I'm the biggest weenie when it comes to driving in snow.

Remember back in 2006 when there was that giant snow storm that started right around the evening commute and there was a seahawks game that night? I was living in Kirkland at the time and I was supposed to go to my parents house for dinner that night. It took me 8 hours to go from Kirkland to Renton and I was stranded at their house for 3 days.

i remember that snow storm. wasn't that bad.. but i couldn't believe all of those people were stranded that long. me and a coworker were stuck in gridlock in downtown kent for 4 hours.. right next to jack in the box so we got out and got some food.. got back in and we were soaked! lol.

405 was a parking lot! I'm just thankful I didn't have to pee during the trip. That would have been bad.

  • On my iPhone but YouTube the pemco insurance ad about one flake of snow freak out lady. If someone would post it I would be forever grateful!

I remember getting off of 405 at some point and taking the side streets, so I probably would have stopped off at Factoria Mall or something to pee. I had never popped a squat or peed outside at that point in my life.

  • I love driving in snow.. then again that's what I grew up with! It's all the other people on the road to worry about not yourself.. and even more so when it's icy!

    This, definitely.

Though, I have to say -- I feel more comfortable with DH driving in snowy/icy conditions. XD He grew up in Michigan; snow and ice driving was the order of the day!

Oh this! H and I grew up in the midwest...

  • I'm not very good at driving in the snow because I don't feel like I've had a ton of experience.  I grew up on a mountain, and so as soon as snow / ice came you basically just stayed in because the roads were so slippery and they rarely plowed.

I do love it when I've got a fully-stocked pantry and heat / firewood / blankets and I can just use the snow as an excuse to curl up with a book and watch the snowflakes fall.  Though by day 2-3, I'm usually going stir crazy.

    Ha, this made me laugh.

  • I don't mind driving in flat snow. I don't like driving in ice. Or worse, on hills. We live on a hill, therefore we don't drive :p.

I remember the artic blast of 2008... it took 2 hours to go 2 exits north on 405! But, H proposed in nearly a foot of snow a couple nights later, so my memories of that storm are generally happy :)

  • i'm one of those "other drivers" you guys are all scared of...which is why i do *not* drive in the snow. last time i did, i got stuck. good thing i was close enough to home, h walked to where i was and rescued me.

additional story-- before i was rescued, i got out of my car to socialize with the other "stuck" drivers- my car started sliding backwards. yay. i had to chase my car on an icy hill. this is why i hate ice.

  • I've driven in snow my entire life - so it doesn't bother me.

That said, I hate driving in snow in places that don't get snow all of the time *cough*Seattle*cough* because of the inexperienced snow drivers.

My best friend grew up in Alaska and is getting all kinds of entertainment at our lack of ability to handle snow. It's embarrassing and I feel bad for her. She keeps texting me asking seriously, is it going to snow for real or not?

Yup, that about sums it up! It's not like I grew up driving in snow and I was nervous the first one or two times I ever encountered it, but now that I have a little compact instead of a light-weight pickup, it's not an issue. Problem is, MOST people around here can't friggin' drive in RAIN. They don't modify driving to be slower and more cautious. Make it snow or ice, and they drive just as crazy and cause problems.

It's easy: drive SLOW, drive cautiously, take all turns slower, start braking WAY ahead of time to allow for potential skidding/sliding.

And you live somewhere that plows!

I am fine driving in snow (even in a crappy car), but when there is snow on top of ice, compacted snow or just sheets of ice b/c nothing is plowed/sanded/etc. then i try not to drive.  I do take care to plan my route so that it doesn't involve hills, allow extra time and take a "kit" with emergency stuff (extra gloves, socks, etc., snack, water, kitty litter, etc.).

  • I get nervous and am more careful b/c (1) there are crazy people out there, (2) ice is scary and you don't always see it and (3) we have a lot of hills!  But, I'm not one of those, OMG it's snowing, I'm gonna die people.  I can drive in it, just carefully.

Last year, I was driving back to my office and had to go down a hill that was icy and not treated and slid onto the sidewalk.  Scary.  Also, by my house there is a VERY narrow road that then has a drop off down to a river.  One winter when there was no snow and no visible ice and I was driving a very normal speed, I hit a patch of black ice, spun out and thought I was going in the river.  So, when it's cold, I don't drive on that road, even though that means taking a longer route.
