Stupid ? re: 9-1-1

How does it work from a cell phone? I can just dial and based on my location it will connect me to the closest dispatch? I hope to never have to use it, yet it is seeming more and more likely I will. TIA

Re: Stupid ? re: 9-1-1

  • Yep, that's exactly how it works! You might check your phone after you hang up though - sometimes the phones will remain in "emergency" mode and you have to go into the settings to change it back to regular settings in order to make any other calls or do anything else.

I have had to use it - not fun - but extremely handy. I hope, for your sake, that you never have to use it.

  • I assume that's how it would work, but I guess I don't know for sure.

Maybe you should also program the local emergency line into your phone, just in case.

  • I have called 911 from my cell phone on 2 different occasions because of witnessing accidents on the interstate. Both times I was routed to the appropriate station and the person on the other end was able to pinpoint where I was (between 2 mile markers) without me needing to provide that info but she did ask me to confirm my location. I have and HTC Evo and it does go into emergency mode after calling 911. There is a sequence of bottoms that the phone prompts you to push if you want to disable that feature after making the call. It is just a safety feature in case the emergency officials would need to call you back and prevents other outside calls from calling.

  • I just wanted to add that one time we were following a VERY drunk driver north in Polk county.  When we called in to 911, Boone County dispatch picked up the call--I imagine based on which tower our call came off of (or something more technical).  We were probably about 5 miles south of Boone County still.  Once we told them our location, they were able to patch us through to Polk County dispatch.
