Best way to get to Grand Canyon
We live on the opposite side of the country - thinking we should fly into Vegas? Or is there a better option, like Phoenix?
Also, should we head to the North Rim or the South Rim?
Just looking for any experiences you would like to share!
Btw, beyond the Grand Canyon, we are wanting to take a week long road trip starting in that area and ending up in CA... would love to check out San Francisco, Monterey, cruise down Hwy 1 past places like Big Sur... we're pretty open at this point!
Not sure how realistic our ideas are at this point... but it's fun to consider our options!
Re: Best way to get to Grand Canyon
On a trip to the North Rim, we flew into Vegas and then drove. It's a nice drive and you can easily stop and visit Zion on the way. The North Rim was beautiful and quite peaceful not overrun with tourists and tee-shirt shops. We went in late May (NR's only open mid-May through Sept/Oct) and thought it was a prefect time of year (still chilly at night, but not freezing or anything).
I also enjoyed driving the northern portion of the Pacific coast hwy; however, that was a separate trip. If you're trying to do both in one trip, to maximize your time, I'd suggest trying to find a regional (cheap) flight from Vegas to San Francisco and then renting a car in SF, rather than driving all the way from Vegas to SF.
Thanks gals!
VABeach08, thanks for the extra tip on a flight from Vegas to SF... definitely a good point.
We went to Vegas back in 2006, and added a trip to the Grand Canyon. We drove to Williams, AZ (a small town right on Rt. 66), stayed the night there and took a train up the next morning (they have a train station there in Williams). It was only a day trip to the GC, but it was awesome and the train was such a fun way to get there!
I think the website is grandcanyonrailway.com (or something similiar)
