Where to live southwest of Philly

Hi all,

My fiance (very soon-to-be-husband) is possibly moving us later this year with his company from Baton Rouge, LA, to Paulsboro, NJ. He says most people who work there live in PA or right across in Delaware. Are there any good/nice areas to live in southwest of Philadelphia? Looking at a map, Chester and Providence (Townships?) Brookhaven, Lima area would be most convenient for his commute into NJ via the Commodore Barry Bridge - but I know NOTHING about this area having never been there. Maybe even right across the Delaware state line? Looking for a nice neighborly community close to shopping, etc. We don't have any kids yet (just a fluffy orange dog). We would be looking for a house to rent or buy. Any and all info would be much appreciated because I have never lived outside Louisiana and I'm kind of freaking out! Haha

TIA!

Lacey

  • I have nothing to add, except that I moved here from BR, where I had lived for a total of 7 years prior. The women here will be able to help a bunch. Bring king cake I'm DYING!

  • You do not want to live in Chester. Repeat Chester is scary.
  • Yes, Chester is very scary, sadly. Stay away. I grew up down in that area and I think a lot of what would be best for you would depend on your budget. Any idea around how much you are looking to spend or pay rent? I grew up in Aston, it's not a bad town, Wallingford is a nice little town if you are looking at more money. If you go over the border to Delaware the Brandywine Hundred area is really nice, with low taxes too. You can look at the areas around Foulk Rd and Rt. 202 (Concord Pike). One thing to think about is that the Commodore Barry Bridge is $5 coming from NJ to Pa, that's not an insignificant amount of money. In New Jersey, take a look at the Swedesboro/Logan Township area. That would be a quick commute to Paulsboro and you wouldn't need to pay a toll. It's an area that is getting built up with family homes. It was previously very rural. It's a really nice area.
  • Thanks for the info! We spend now about $1500-2000/mo on a mortgage and would like to stay within that if we were to rent. If we were going to buy, I'd say in the $250-325K range?

I believe his company provides a little bit for the toll - at least the have in other cities that I know of, but I'll look into those areas you mentioned. Ruling nothing out right now!

  • I would say to look into Media, Springfield, and parts of Ridley Township too - Folsom, Rutledge Borough, Swarthmore/Swarthmorewood are nice areas and you are sure to find houses withing that price range easily.  Taxes in Ridley are high, though.  All places I mentioned are right near the either 95 or 476, so an easy trek to NJ.

  • Have you considered living in NJ?

Towns like Haddonfield, Haddon Heights, and Collingswood are a little more north (about 20 minutes) which puts them closer then the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

  • Ridley Park is one of the nicest towns in that area, and also very affordable.  I live there. There are a lot of nice victorian houses and also smaller homes.  We have lots of neighborhood festivals in the "business district" which is just an old fashioned main street.  We also have an awesome farmers market all summer on Thursdays.

Swarthmore and Media are also very nice but a little more expensive than Ridley Park.  The houses in Swarthmore are gorgeous and old with lots of big trees, its a beautiful town.

Springfield is also perfectly fine, but doesn't have a real "town".  It has nice enough malls and typical well-maintained suburban homes.

All of these towns are within 15 minutes of each other.

  • Maybe somewhere off of 476 such as Havertown, Radnor, Wayne, Villanova areas?  I would definitely suggest renting for a year and getting to know area before settling down.
