Minnesota lake vacation rental suggestions?
Hi, we are considering vacation options and thought about possibility of renting a cabin/home on a lake in Minnesota. Someplace we can swim, have a campfire, but still close enough to towns/attractions where if we want a break from the lake on a day or 2 that's possible.
We are looking at June or July and it's just me, DH and our then 18m old son.
Ive read a bit about the North Shore and Brainerd Lakes. Any thoughts or suggestions on these locations? And other locations I should look into?
Re: Minnesota lake vacation rental suggestions?
I live in MN and Brainerd lakes area is probably my favorite place to visit in the summer. When are you planning on going and how many people? I would suggest looking at VRBO.com for cabin rentals. They do book up fast so I'd look ASAP for that area. The north shore is nice, but not really swimable since its on lake superior. I'd also look into the Alexandria chain of lakes area. The town has cute shops and other stuff going on in the summer.
Brainerd lakes area is where we went every summer. We had a cabin on Cross Lake.
Here's some info on the Whitefish Chain:

I am just agreeing with other posters that the Brainerd area is probably the way to go. There are some other areas as well like Ely, Cross Lake, along the St Croix River, Lake Pepin, etc. - these are all great.
I will agree that while the North Shore is beautiful, I would not recommend a cabin on Superior. The water is freezing in the summer. There may be other lakes in the area that you could do and just be near Superior.
Check out this website...it has a ton of vacation rentals. http://www.exploreminnesota.com/index.aspx
Brainerd is my top choice as well, followed by North Shore. North Shore is geographically more interesting (think cliffs over rocky shores), Brainerd is more dense forest with tons of lakes. My favorite resort is Grand View Lodge. It is not cheap- but you can get a 2-5 bedroom cabin for a decent price at their last minute rate (booking a week or two before coming). For example, we're going to try to book a place in a couple weeks and it looks like we'll get a 2 bedroom townhome with extra sleeping loft for about $209 a night (a steal if you're splitting the cost with others). You can get similar deals in the summer on non-holiday weekends. There is a lot to do- pools, restaurants, bar, game room, bike trails, and you're a stones throw from downtown Nisswa.
There are lots of other resorts that offer cabins- Maddens, Craguns, Breezy Point, Lost Lake Lodge, Manhatten Beach Lodge, Kavanaughs. I've stayed at teh first three and Grand View is still my fave although Craguns and Maddens are even bigger and have more amenities.
