Looking into pre-school

I'm thinking of sending Josh to 3yr old preschool in the fall.  (p.s.  OMGWTH  where did that time go?!?)

I'm looking at smaller possibly church based pre-schools within a few minutes of home.  Church based isn't a necessity, there just happens to be a lot of them around me! So, the question is, what kind of questions would you ask or what kind of things would you look for if you were visiting one?  Obv size of class and cleanliness, but what else?

  • i've been reading articles that you want a good discovery/play as much as "academics" at that age.

  • Can you share the links to the stuff you've been reading?

  • Are they all the same religion as what you both are? that was the biggest issue for us, the school we decided to send T2 to is lutheran, we are catholic. Religion is just part of the day as in they say small prayers, talk about God/Jesus and celebrate christmas/Easter however it is not drilled and really taught like in a regular catholic school so we were okay with it. Most of the teachers there are not lutheran either, they are all catholic.

Another thing to ask about besides religion and prayer is potty training. Do they assist with it or expect him to be fully trained when he starts? What is a daily schedule like? Is there any outdoor or gym related activities where they get out of the classroom setting? Does their lunch need to be refrigerated and do you microwave things? (may sound silly but at first I didn't think to pack an icepack because his previous school just refrigerated all the lunchboxes) Is there a scheduled nap time?

  • Kell, what Lutheran school do you send T2 to? You can send me a FB msg if you want. I ask because I went to a Lutheran grade school in Philly (which is also my church). Just wondering which one because there aren't many.

  • Also, Lachute, we need to discuss this.  Our guys have some time, but I still am overwhelmed thinking about stuff in the neighborhood.

I would like a not super churchy, non-$38562407856034650348 a semester option, thanks.

I was checking out the cooperative preschool and green tree school online last week actually. i wonder about more manayunk/eastfalls/rox centric though.

I hate the idea of sending him too far out of the neighborhood, you know?  All of those rug rats have to be going somewhere!

i bet your blonde pixie neighbor knows!

  • Question: are you all looking into pre-school for this coming Fall or is this for when the tykes are 3 yo? I recently contacted a local school to enroll him in mother's morning out to learn I needed to enroll him in August '11 (aka 10 months old) for him to start Fall '12 (aka 2 years old). I had no clue. I thought I was ahead of the curve.  I'm now starting to scramble for Fall '13!!!
  • We are in a weird spot because DS is a November birthday.  ideally, Iwould like to start him in a two or three morning a week program in Fall 2013, but there aren't a ton of options because he won't be three in September..  A few places will take them if they are three by December, but not a ton.

So yes, I am looking now for a place to consider for Fall 2013, since most places I have come across start enrollment/applications the fall before, so September of this year.

All of that being said, I think Lachute and I live in a unquiely void area for this stuff.  Iwant some place he can go play with other kids for two hours, and maybe learn some colors - like the basic tot rec I went to as a kid.  It is more difficult to find than I imagined.  Most things seem to be full daycare programs or spendy private school.

Alot also has to do with potty training. I'm not convinced my child will be perfectly potty trained. Since milo is a January birthday i'm looking for mix classes. I read one where they have to turn 3 by dec 31. Um milo is jan 3 so that kind of stinks.

Did you see my retest of northern homes. I'm interested to see what the plan for preschool is.
