clicky: WWSND?

I'm flying up H's friend from SoCal for his birthday. I told his friend that I would pay for his tickets using my miles.

The flights that he wants to take are blacked out and (right now) it's about $300 round trip.

Re: clicky: WWSND?

  • you should just book the one that you want him to take.. you're flying him out.. and the only thing that would bug me is if it interferred with work. if it doesn't.. book the flight that is 2hrs later..

His ideal (blacked out) flight leave SNA at about 6pm, but the one that I can get with miles leaves about 8pm.

    this is totally reasonable.

  • Totally reasonable -- you're not asking him to get to the airport at 4am or miss work to take an earlier flight; his flight will still be in by midnight.  You're good.

  • ok thanks for the confirmation that I'm not being super cheap.
  • I voted pay for the ticket and save your miles - I'm not sure who they're with, but if they're with anyone apart from Southwest, you tend to get much more bang for your buck with international flights than with domestic ones, and since I know you're a big traveler and you and H like to go international, I'd recommend saving them for a big trip.  I have to assume you're using at least 20K, maybe more, and you can get to Europe for 50K (so if you look at 20K buying you $300 of value, then 50K = $750 but Europe typically costs more than that from Seattle), and you can get to Central / Northern South America for 30K in the off-peak times.  Just my opinion - I have never burned a mile for a domestic ticket and I never will.

This is a good point, but I hate, hate flying AA and it seems like that's the best carrier to book with to Europe for Alaska miles. Delta seems to have ridiculously long lay overs and that's no bueno.

I didn't realize it was so cheap to get to central and northern south america in the off season.... hmm.... Thanks for the tip.

Just to warn you, that's on AA, but if you REALLY hate them - splurge and do business class (60K miles each ticket).  Their business class isn't too bad - we flew them to Buenos Aires and it was decent.  Also, I wonder if AA won't be better now that they're fully integrated with Alaska's FF program?  I hate them, too, but I guess I can tough it out for free tickets.

Also, to get to Europe from Seattle, you can fly on KLM, Air France, or British Airways, and now you can do Iceland Air as well.  BA has high taxes associated with their flights, but H and I have done the KLM SEA-AMS flight on miles and the Air France SEA-CDG on miles (both times on 50K a ticket).  The trick is (1) booking during the not-super-high-peak-season (i.e. book April or May; September after Labor Day, etc.), and (2) booking far in advance.  I just think your miles will almost always net you a better return if you go internationally.  Not to mention - if you book the ticket on a domestic airline and the fare goes on sale, you have 3 months with which to claim the difference as a travel credit (which can be used for anyone, as it won't be associated with your H's best friend's name).  So, the $300 would be the max you'd pay, but you could always end up getting $$$ back if you watch the fare.

I think go with miles and he can pay if he wants go go another time!
