SO, I saw her this morning at a meeting. I didn't bring it up but she did. She started with "Well, I don't have to go to that school again"
And there was another person in the room with us, so she recapped and I got a better understanding.
This time, when talking about it, she made a bigger issue of it being a Muslim school than about the head scarf and she said "yeah, and they were all 'who created this and that?' and 'Allah did' and 'Praise Allah'" and then she scrunched her face in a way that made me think what she actually heard was "BURN THE TOWERS. KILL ALL THE INFIDELS".
So she called the teacher union and said she was just asking in general but apparently ended up on the phone with the president of the union who went over her boss's head and called the big boss of special ed and ordered that she not be forced to go to the school.
SO, um, yeah...
Re: Update to coworker/head scarf issue
::crinkly nose::
I read it way after the thread was dead, but I could see how being forced to wear a scarf because you're a woman could be uncomfortable for some people. I don't think I'd like doing it, although I might be willing to in that circumstance.
This though, is not that.
I'm sad the union backed her up like that too.

What abitch.
The kid still gets serviced, just not by her.
Although she did call the mom and ask her if she could see him at home. And she said the mom apologized for the head scarf issue. So, yeah, great, she made the mom feel like shiit for her religion.
She also said she made sure the union understood that this was not a discrimination issue because she would see the kid at home.
And I am not surprised by the union. I knew a teacher, she was a friend at one time, who smoked crack off campus and then returned to campus high and was taken down by cops in the hallway and sent to jail. She got her job back thanks to the union.
Getthefuckoutofhere. Please tell me you just made that up.

Ugh.
Well, maybe the fewer children she educates, the better.
Does the child's mother know that there are other people equipped to work with her? Because I would not want this assshole working with my kid anywhere.
I, in fact, don't want her working with any children anywhere.
I'm strongly pro-union in a lot of cases but not for teachers.
It's stories like winged's that make me rather proud of my particular union. I feel like ours is reasonable. There is no way a teacher would keep their job at our school if they were caught with drugs. Unfortunately, reasonable teacher unions don't seem to be the norm (at least not the ones we hear about, anyway).
And yeah, winged, your co-worker kind of sucks.
What if she were uncomfortable in an all black school? It's not okay for teachers to put their discomfort over differences in front of teaching the children just because there are other solutions. What message does the fact that this woman refuses to come to her school send to this little girl, or her parents?
omg for REAL. And I say this as a dues-paying member of NEA.
I bet her FUPA's name is Shane, like the gunslinger/drifter of literature.--HappyTummy
Fallin, does your example come from the idea that she's uncomfortable with the Muslins[sic]? Or that she's uncomfortable wearing a scarf and being in an explicitly religious school? Because while I don't agree with her stance, I don't think the latter is quite equivalent.

WTF.
I don't really see a difference. I think she's very likely a bigot, but I don't really care if she just doesn't want to be want to be around people with different beliefs.
I am not a member of the union. I just think at least in Houston it is too militant over teachers being right all the time. It has a lot of political power.
There are not a ton of people that do what this teacher does, not because it's so highly skilled, but because this is a specialty position and those get cut back first. But still, there will be someone.
I didn't have as much of a problem with her choice until it was obvious that it was based in discrimination. And to know that the discrimination is being backed up and supported makes me sad.
I can think of several circumstances where I might feel uncomfortable that wouldn't be motivated by bigotry, but would feel uncomfortable enough that I'd question my ability to do my job effectively. Especially something as sensitive as assisting a special needs child.
I don't think it applies here because I don't doubt she is motivated by bigotry. But I think that general idea was what Cali was getting at. Maybe not.

I can think of some too. If she were concerned for her personal safety. Or if she were being asked to profess religious beliefs she doesn't hold. But I don't think being in a religious school does that. Maybe wearing the head scarf skirts closer to the line, but I don't think it crosses it. If you are going to choose to work in a public job where you are expected to go into a variety of atmospheres and work with (especially) children of different backgrounds, you should be pretty open to dealing with all those differences. If not, find a new job. Or you know, cry to your union.
You may be, being so separated from the situation. And certainly, I would not be surprised if I was outside of it. I am a little surprised just because I have never gotten this vibe from this person. It is disappointing.
I don't really think bigots give off a vibe because people are rarely pushed outside their comfort zones. Then, bam, they say or do something that makes you go, OH.
true overall. But generally, at least in Texas, I have found it easy to spot the bigots. This person seriously has shown so much compassion and professionalism on another case in which we are working together that this was a big bam.
Yep.
