So, I spent the morning in the hospital

I started feeling light headed this morning in the office, got up to go lie on a couch in another office and didn't make it more than a few feet before I passed out. I was only out for about 30 seconds and luckily didn't hit my head or my stomach. My boss called EMT services immediately and my blood pressure was low when they got there, so I was taken to the hospital.

I got a whole host of test -- EKG, blood work, chest xray, fetal heart rate, etc. -- and everything came back normal. They determined that it was a vagal episode, which has something to do with the nervous system and the body's ability to regulate blood pressure. Apparently it's not uncommon during pregancy, and could have been sparked by me being overheated (I was wearing Uggs and a really heavy sweater this morning).

Scary of course, but the baby and I are both fine, so all good. Ah, the joys of pregnancy.

  • sorry to hear that jess. good news you and the little one are okay though. there were a few times, usually after walking to work, i felt super over-heated and like i was going to pass out. i started keeping some paper towels at my desk and using my water bottle to do a cool, wet paper towel on my neck. it usually helped in case it happens again.

  • So scary, glad you are both ok.  I almost passed out once when I was pregnant.  I was at the mall and had to sit on the floor right in the jewelry department and I had all these old ladies fanning me and getting me drinks.  Looking back on it, it was pretty funny but scared the crapout of me at the time.

Ditto Ering about keeping water near you at all times.

  • Glad to know you're both alright - yikes!

Something similar happened to me yesterday but I didn't pass out.  I was at the derm getting a full skin check and she had to numb me to get a few biopsies.  It was hot in the room + fear of needles + + blood + general PG queasiness...my hearing got cloudy and I started seeing spots!  They made me lie down and got me a lollipop - luckily after a few minutes I was feeling much better, but DH was horrified at the thought of me driving home after that happened!  It's so fun :)

  • Thanks, everyone. Sitting with a bottle of water at my desk and making sure to eat regular small meals :) Hopefully it was a one time thing.
  • I passed out with two of my pregnancies, once in target the other in shop rite. It's scary but good to know nothing serious. Glad you both at okay! I started carrying a big thermos of water everywhere I went and retired my uggs, they really cause my body to overheat

  • Glad you're ok!

Make sure to keep some sort of quick acting food with you like fruit or fruit juice. You can easily have a blood sugar crash while pregnant and you get similar symptoms - dizziness, sweating, etc.
