Please tell me I'm not the only jerk who laughed

Paula Deen having adult onset diabetes kicked my schadenfreude into overdrive.

Until I heard she was diagnosed in 2008. It took her 3 freaking years worth of butter and ham fantasia for her to fess up to an obesity linked disorder? Suck it.

I'm surprised it didn't show up sooner than 2008!

  • No!  I wanted to post about this same thing but I was scared people would call me cruel.  I giggled.

See, Paula Deen's show used to be on one of the TVs at the gym I went to before I started working out at home.  So I would watch this women consume more butter in a single sitting than I averaged in several weeks while running my tail off.  She has more money than I will ever imagine having but I get some vindictive joy from it.

Also, she took 3 years because that's how long it took before she finally found something to endorse and make money off of her disease.  She's promoting a type 2 medication.  Instead of promoting a healthier lifestyle.

    Paula gonna be Paula.

  • Of course you're not, it is indeed hilarious.

  • I LMFAO'd too.  But then again, any adults who are SHOCKED that eating like her will give you diabetes (or high cholesterol, a heart condition, obesity, etc) are too stupid for me to even care about.  I don't think it's her job to teach the nation how to eat... but there sure is something shady about the fact that she happily touted her unhealthy lifestyle until someone was willing to pay her to expose it.

All I know is that I don't eat like Paula Deen and I'm damn glad.  I don't even WANT to eat like that.  I've had ONE thing from a recipe of her's and it was downright revolting.  Super sweet, super buttery... I took one bite, almost threw up and had to throw it out.

  • Newp.  I find the whole thing hilarious.  Just read a CNN article that said she told a morning show that her food "may" have been "one contributing factor"

  • I actually like Paula Deen. She reminds me of my great-grandmother.

I have two Paula Deen cookbooks. I've only made 3 things out of them. Two were really good and one was scallops, so I didn't eat it.

I tweak the recipes to suit our tastes (which means eliminating at least 3/4 of the butter). One was a chicken pot pie, it called for melting 8 tbsp (that's right, a whole stick) of butter and pouring it over the top crust before baking. Holy schit that's a lot of butter.

I don't use those cookbooks often. They require a lot of adjusting, both for preventing early heart attacks and for quantity.

Oh, and I did giggle when she announced she had diabetes. Like we didn't see that coming. Hasn't she already had a mild heart attack? I could be wrong on that, so don't quote me. I just thought I heard that somewhere.

  • the fact that she sat on a diagnosis until she could market it by partnering w/ a drug company rubs me wrong.

  • Nope! You definitely are not the only one!
    Oh, FFS.
  • She had it coming. But I think it was funny that it was actually NEWS. I mean, it was like when Star Jones finally went on TV to admit she had gastric bypass. Paula Deen has been preparing meals that are nothing short of heart-attacks on plates for way too long.

Side note that I'm sure no one will believe, but I met her walking out of a market in Savannah Georgia maybe three-ish years ago. She wasn't nearly as round as she looks on TV. Damn near average. I didn't follow her show that closely then, and simply asked her if she was "that lady from television". She gave me a long "mmmmmm-hhhmmmmm" and I got a picture with her. Really suprised at how not huge she is (was).
