2 year olds and toys...

So, sometimes I feel like my kid never plays with a single toy that we have. He's barely even touched his toys from Christmas...and maybe plays with his train table for 5 minutes a day, if that. For a while I just kind of blamed it on being at daycare all day playing with toys and then being over it by the time he got home. But now I'm starting to think that maybe it's just the age? He has some pots and pans and this weekend when I was cooking he would bring them over to the stove and try to put them on there so he could cook with me. And then when I make him cook somewhere else he would bring me the food and want me to eat it. I know as they get older they start really doing a lot more pretend play and I'm noticing more and more that he's doing a lot more of that... Well, we had planned on buying him a tool bench or a kitchen set for his b-day, but after seeing how little he was playing with his Christmas toys, we decided to say eff it since we didn't think he would play with it anyway, but now I kind of feel like as he gets older he might play with it more? So, have you found that to be true? Or would it most likely be a waste of $$ and space? I'm just really sick of having so many damn toys all over the place and them never getting used. :(

Re: 2 year olds and toys...

  • I would get something that goes with imaginative play.  E is 3.5 and has a play kitchen she uses a lot.  She also has a million Littlest Pet Shop characters that she plays with all the time.  She makes them interact and play in their little world.
  • This kind of goes back to the whole, "I got them all these gifts and all they care about is the BOX!"  It's probably one of the biggest annoyances of parents everywhere.

Besides his trains, and he only really plays with those sometimes these days, he doesn't play with any toys.  For the most part, we either play "school" using his little folder from school and a notebook, markers and a few books OR we play "car" (like we're going somewhere) with my mom's spare car key.

I've really started noticing more & more than he just wants to spend time and play with us and whether or not it includes toys doesn't matter to him.

Anyway, I feel yo' pain, sister!  I want to sell all this crap, but alas, I have another who MIGHT play with it - LOL!

  • Blake got a play kitchen when he turned 2 and I got all kind of crap for getting a boy a kitchen...anyway he loved it and still plays with it all the time...I think it allows for a lot of imaginative play...he is always making us food and drinks and having us eat it, etc...
  • I agree with Jennie.  Evan is much more interested in playing with us than with toys.  We play his "match game" or fishing game every day.  He's obsessed with his Baby Sam doll and taking care of him.  I often find he and DH changing baby Sam's poopy diaper and burping him :)  Another thing he really likes is sorting shapes/matching numbers/doing anything with the alphabet.  He loves it when we all sit at the table after dinner and play Playdoh.  DH makes awesome cars and planes that Evan goes apeshite for.

When he's playing with his kitchen or tool bench, he's making stuff for us...cooking us dinner, "fixing" our chair, etc.  last night we all had to use Legos to make tunnels for his trains.

I'm glad we have all that stuff to foster his imagination but it does get frustrating when he'd much rather play with a plastic bowl and the broom than all the big stuff :)
