HELP!

Ladies, I need to clean out my closet.  Everytime I attempt to do this, I freak out.  I have a TON of clothes I need to get rid of, but for this reason or that reason (none make any sense) I don't.  Part of me thinks "I MIGHT need that one day!"  but I haven't in like 3 years.

How do you get past the side of your brain saying "Keep it!" when you know someone else could get good use out of it!

Re: HELP!

  • I am the same way. What's worked for me in the past is pulling the items from my closet and putting them in the closet in our spare room for a few weeks. If I decide to wear the item in that timeframe, I move it back to my closet. If I don't, it goes to Goodwill.

I purged my closet when we moved last month and have thought "that sweater would really go well with my outfit today, too bad I donated it." And then realized, it wasn't the end of the world. I had another that looked fine. Plus, someone else probably has it and has worn it way more than I would have if I had it. BUT, I feel your pain and just wish I could get H on board to get rid of a couple things!

  • If it doesn't fit, just throw it away.  If you haven't worn it in a year, just throw it away.  Just do it!  You can live without that article of clothing.  It's not necessary.  Besides, if I find I do need a certain shade of cardigan, I can go out and get another one -- maybe one I like better.  I look at cleaning out my closet as a way to start over.  I keep the tried and true favorites and I know that more space in my closet means more opportunity to fill it up with clothes that DO fit or that I know I WILL wear!

  • I never have room for all my clothes. When the seasons change, I go through all my clothes and see which ones need to go to charity and which ones stay. The stay clothes get boxed up and head to storage and the boxed up clothes that are already in storage come in.
  • If I noticed that I have not worn it in two years it gets chucked. If not, it stays.
  • If you go an entire year without wearing the clothes, toss it. Here's how you can tell.

At the beginning of the season, hang the hanger on the rod backwards, so that the opening of the hanger is facing you instead of the back of your closet. As you wear, wash, and rehang your clothes, put them on the hanger properly. At the end of the year/season, any clothes that are  still on backwards hangers are ready to be tossed/donated!

  • I have the same problem.I have a new rule. Every time I buy new clothes I get rid of a few too. It helps keep my closet under control. As for getting rid of a bunch at once. I donate to the salvation army, just knowing that someone who needs it more than me helps.
