Puerto Rico restaurant recs?

I'm looking for some restaurant recommendations for our upcoming trip to Puerto Rico.  We'll be staying at the St. Regis and plan to have a rental car for a few days.

Typically on vacation we do casual brunch/lunch and a nicer more expensive dinner but we're open to any recommendations for great food!

Re: Puerto Rico restaurant recs?

  • I have a post in my blog (link in siggy) about our trip to PR including all the places that we ate.

Since you will have a car for a few days, I highly recommend driving into the country to find some lechon- pig on a spit.  It is usually found in a road-side stand or in a very casual lunch counter with outdoor tables.  We found it on our drive from San Juan east toward Luquillo/Fajardo/El Yunque but there are also places in the mountains.  If you search the TripAdvisor forums I'm sure you'll find lots of recommendations for lechoneras.

Also, if you are going to be in the Luquillo area, there are many food kiosks on the side of the road near the beach.  They look run down and maybe a little shady at night but they have a huge variety of delicious foods- you can tell the good ones by the lines.

If you head into Old San Juan in the morning, breakfast at Cafe Mallorca or La Bombonera is delish.  We had authentic Puerto Rican lunch at El Jibarito and enjoyed a casual dinner at El Patio de Sam.  In Luquillo, we LOVED Guava's food AND atmosphere- they had a live band playing traditional music and people would get up and dance right at their table.  That's just the places that stood out enough for me to remember off the top of my head- we had so much good food while in PR!

  • First, skip Pikayo.  Our meal was fine, but it's nothing that you can't get here in the States.  I was hoping for fancy Puerto Rican food.  Instead, it was just like any run-of-the-mill American fine dining.  Ingredients weren't even local, which was disappointing.

Our favorite meals consisted of street food!

Drive to Luquillo.  There is a long row of kiosks.  We happened to eat at one called La Parilla, but I imagine all of them are pretty good.

This girl blogged about La Parilla.

Drive to Pi?ones.  There are stands everywhere.  Pick one and enjoy bountiful fried goodness!  We enjoyed bacalaitos and alcapurrias on the beach.

We didn't eat in Old San Juan, but my Puerto Rican friend recommends La Mallorquina for a meal, La Bombonera for a mallorca and a coffee, and La Barrachina for a pi?a colada (it's the purported birthplace of the drink).

Try a piragua.  It's a Puerto Rican sno-cone.  Little carts are everywhere.

Don't miss Bebo's BBQ before you leave.  It's next door to a McDonald's close to the airport and near our rental car place.  The chicken is incredible!

You'll be tempted by the ribs and sausage, but I promise you that the chicken steals the show!  Just get a whole one!  The same girl blogged about Bebo's!  She loves it as much as we did.  LOL.

And that's what we ate.  We were only there two days. Smile

Aside from this food, I highly recommend that you visit Vieques to experience the bioluminescent bay if it is a new moon when you go.  We had another meal while we were on Vieques, but it was nothing noteworthy.  The bio bay, however, was one of the greatest experiences of our lives.  Take the ferry to the island and stay the night.

  • Thank you so much for the recs. I will be sure to write down your suggestions so we can check them out!
