All this snow is making me think about...
the trip H and I want to take in March/April. What are the best CA beaches? We're looking to fly into either LA or San Diego. Bonus points if you tell me why and where to stay.

I don't think it'll be quite warm enough for real beach weather in SoCal in March/April. If I'm remembering right it'll be in the upper 60's low 70's at that time.
That being said, if I were taking a trip to SoCal and I wanted a relaxing cute beach area I'd high recommend Santa Barbara. It's an adorable little laid back town with great places to eat.
I'm partial to Coronado - I think the resort is nice and the beach is great. Stay away from Northern California as it won't be warm enough then (looks like you know that already).
I guess a lot of other people like the Santa Monica area - but it doesn't do much for me and I don't know much about the beach scene in L.A. I much prefer Santa Barbara to anything in the L.A. area (Malibu is nice but not as nice as Santa Barbara, IMHO); if you don't mind the drive I think that's a great place (plus you can do wine tasting and check out Solvang, a cute little Danish town, if you tire of the beach). I've heard it compared to the French Riviera, but having not yet been to the French Riviera I don't know how accurate that is.
Just in general, I'd say go for something near San Diego (or go to Santa Barbara) over Los Angeles... but that's because I really don't care much for L.A.
