Anyone buy a mattress recently?

We are in need of a new mattress, and I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for retailers.  We are looking for King size.  If you've purchased a King size and are willing to share, how much did you pay?

Thanks.

Re: Anyone buy a mattress recently?

  • Do you need mattress only or a set with the box springs?

I bought a new bed about 2 years ago from Costco. It was a queen size (can't fit a King in our house) but we are really happy with it. It is one of the memory foam mattress. I think a King mattress would run you about $800.

Really the best thing is to go into a store and spend a good amount of time laying on beds. I know Art Van had/has a diagnostic bed which you lay on and it measures the pressure points when you lay on it and it helps direct you toward the right type of bed.

  • Excellent question.  The mattress and box springs are both pretty old.  How do I know if I need new ones?

  • Warranty wise. Most manufactures will only warranty the mattress if it sits on their box springs. Best bet would be getting a new set or new mattress and a platform bed. Which is what I did.
  • Also if it helps, the bed creaks like a SOB.  I hate it.  I woke up everytime Nick shifted positions because it made so much noise.

  • Wow, yep that is old. You may be interested looking into the Simmons Brand of mattress. The coils are individual meaning they are not linked together and that means Nick won't feel you move and vice versa. Same thing with memory foam. Ryan only feels me pull the sheets and not flipping around.
  • Wow, thanks for the help!!  :-)  I'll definitely look into the ones suggested.

  • We bought a new mattress last fall from Jonathon Stevens.  We love it!  They were wonderful to work with.  They are a local company, they do all the mattresses for the Amway and the JW.  They make them right here in Grand Rapids.  I feel like I'm sleeping in heaven.  :-)

I believe they sell the box spring with the mattress, so it's priced as a set.  I'd suggest if you replace one that you replace them both.  It sounds like your bed is super old anyway.

The best thing to do is go lay on a bunch of beds and take your time making a decision.  Put the time into picking out exactly what you want.  GL!

  • We got a Jonathan Stevens mattress set (queen) a few years ago. It's about time for us to get a new one, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with them again.
  • I randomly wandered into  JS a few weeks ago.  The pricing did seem really good for the mattress and box spring OTD.  Did it also include the frame?  We might not need a frame.

  • Ours didn't include a frame. Although, you may be able to find something on Craigslist or work something out with them. I know my company has done a "free frame with mattress" promotion before, I don't think the frame is the moneymaking part of the deal.
  • A new frame might be a good idea.
  • Thanks ladies!  Now all we need are Nick's W2's so we can get our taxes done.  Hopefully we get enough back for a new set!

We got ours from JS almost 5 years ago.  We paid $1,300 for a king + box spring, frame, and a sheet thing that protects the mattress from stains.

I like the mattress.  I think we should have gone with a softer one, but that's my fault for not choosing more carefully.  It's 1000 x's better than what we had.  :)

  • Thanks for posting this, WOP.  And thanks to everyone for the responses.  A new set is on this list for us for this year.  Note to self: JS.

  • we recently got a top of the line Kingsdown (I think) from Art Van, it was around $3,000 and it has memory foam on top but regular below that. It's REALLY thick! Our queen frame was supposed to be able to expand to fit a king, but since we didn't have a headboard or footboard the footboard thingies stuck out so DH just built a frame out of 2x4s.
  • We have a Select Comfort bed & LOVE it! They don't make the model bed we have anymore (since we've had it for about 8 or 9 years) but all of the ones that are out now are nicer then the one we have. The beds can be a bit pricey but we bought ours during a "warehouse" sale so it was 50% off. I get coupons 2 or 3 times a year if anyone ever wants to buy one. The last set I got was for $800 off!

  • We got a new set last spring at Talsma's and l LOVE it!  They have free delivery and set up, and are usually running a sale on them.  Most of the time the sale even includes a free tv! We looked all over the place, got "trapped" at Art Van learning more than I ever cared to know about mattress for over an hour.  Ours is a Simmons Beautyrest Kensington, and we paid about $650 for the queen set.
  • We will be using our refund for a mattresses too! But they are for the girls. We are finally moving them out of their toddler beds. There is a full size set at Costco that i am really hoping they still have by the time we are ready to purchase them.
  • I highly recommend Denver Mattress Company.
