Car insurance recommendations?

We are with State Farm right now and I think we're paying way too much. Have thought about switching to Progressive or Geico if we can get some savings but wondering if anyone has experience with them (or any other) that you'd recommend? Thanks!

Re: Car insurance recommendations?

  • We currently have Progressive, and once a ticket or two drops off we'll have our insurance broker that handles our homeowners find us some new car insurance. With our ticket history he couldn't do much better than what we were getting with Progressive. Geico has never been able to give me a decent rate. I would say check with a broker. A broker can check multiple companies and you've already got State Farm covered, which a broker can't check there. We use Pinnacle Insurance for our homeowners and have been very happy dealing with them. For some reason it was painful to find homeowners, no one would call me back, or give me quotes. Troy however was beyond excellent to deal with and they even send us birthday cards with a scratch off ticket in them every year. Nice little thing, not a deciding factor, but a nice thing I have never experienced thru any other insurance company that's for sure.

  • I had Progressive prior to switching to State Farm.  I never had issues with Progressive and the customer service was good.  Their rates were pretty comparable to what we have now.  We went through a broker for 6 years and ended up having a horrible experience with our home owners insurance that we had through them and didn't feel like our broker was helpful (I will never ever recommend Auto-Owners Insurance Company).  We ended up switching everything over to State Farm, added life insurance and saved $800 a year!

  • I had an absolutely horrible experience with Progressive when my car got totaled.  They did not offer me a fair price for the value of my car, I think because the person who hit me also had Progressive and they just wanted to try to cut their losses.  Their customer service was horrible.  I had to go into an office to pick up my check for the totaled vehicle and I spoke with 2 ppl, one of who was supposedly a manager.  Although they generally are the least expensive, I will NEVER go back to them.  I will pay the extra money to know that my insurance company is actually on my side.

  • I had Progressive for a while. I never filed claims or anything but I've heard from several people that they can be a PITA to deal with.

I used a broker before Progressive and now we use my cousin who is also a broker. We switched everything from Progressive (my car) and State Farm (DH's truck, auto, umbrella policy) to AAA and saved $1000 a year.

  • I've been very happy with Allstate. They are not the cheapest but every time I've had any sort of an issue their service has been incredible.
