Big Brother Gift Ideas?

I plan to take Eli to pick out small stuffed animal that he can bring to the hospital to give to Ruby when first meets her.

I'd also like to have a small toy or something that can be a gift from her to him. I figure something quiet that he can play with while he's visiting. Any ideas?  Any other suggestions or tips of helping the older sibling feel included when #2 arrives?

Re: Big Brother Gift Ideas?

  • Stickers or a play doctor's kit (or just a stethoscope) so he can check her out (gently)?

  • The stickers are doctor's kit are such good ideas!  That would be adorable.  Jake has an Elmo sticker activity book from Target that would definitely be quiet and fun for Eli at the hospital.  Does he like Thomas Take Along trains??  If he has a set already, she could get him a new train and take that to the hospital too.

When Katie was born, Jake picked out a rattle for her and she got him a play tent that he jumped on and broke w/ in 10 minutes of owning it  :o/.  While we were in the hospital, my room had a pedal-operated sink and Katie "gave" him a popsicle so he was in heaven.  His visit there was very short (maybe 20-30 mins) and then he was off w/ the grandparents for some fun.

To make him feel special, tell him how happy he makes Ruby when he's with her...I read somewhere that it's hard for people not to like someone who really likes them and it was true w/ Jake & Katie.  We also taught him how to hold her sitting on a floor or a large bed with a Boppy so he'd feel special.  For some reason, he was obsessed w/ her feet and hands and would just beeline for them and tickle them - it was really cute.  He also used to help pick out her clothes and give her baths.  Best of luck though - I'm sure Eli will be a great big brother!

  • When we had Leah I was pretty lucky that my parents lived within 20 minutes of the hospital so they would bring Joshua in for a bit and then go home and come back when he missed me!  The first night my mom brought him in at like 8:30pm because he couldn't go to bed without kissing me good night and didn't like the fact that I was staying at the hospital!

So Joshua wouldn't get jealous of Leah my family really helped out by not only buying her something but buying him something too! So pretty much each time he came to visit me there was a gift for him from someone in my family! Like one of my aunts bought him the gel like shapes that you can play with on the window and a football water bottle. Another one of my aunts bought him his favorite character crayons/coloring book, another aunt bought him some special snacks and the list goes on! But to make him connect with Leah he went to the gift shop and picked out a special stuffed animal for her just from him that he gave her the first time he saw her! Too cute!

Before she got here we talked a lot about her to him and he helped me get her room ready. Once she got here he was allowed to hold her whenever he wanted to and was able to help me change her clothes, give her a bath, etc! Also, when MH would get home from work I would hand her off to him and it would just be time for me and Joshua for a bit and then I would take her back and he would have just him and daddy time for a bit BUT then we would all 4 do something! Even something as simple as laying Leah on the floor and all of us sitting down on the floor to play with her! And I think by us doing that he never got jealous of her and they are super close now which I LOVE that!!

Good Luck! I'm sure whatever you do will make Eli a great big brother!!

  • Thanks for the ideas and tips! Eli has been very involved in setting up Ruby's room- helped Tim put in a shelf in her closet, picked out the paint color (well, after we narrowed it down to two) and has been very proud and excited. He helped us get out all of the baby gear and has been talking all about how much she will like certain things. So, now we are just trying to prepare for when she's actually here!
