STR: What kind of shirt is this?

Looking to book a W. Caribbean cruise in 2013 and I've been researching cave tubing excursion while in Belize. I've seen several of the people wear this- can someone help me identify what kind of shirt this is? Where can I purchase this kind of shirt?

Re: STR: What kind of shirt is this?

  • It looks like a rash guard.

They're used in all kinds of water sports to prevent abrasion, to protect against certain flora & fauna (e.g. jellyfish stings), or as sun protection. You should be able to find one at any kind of sporting goods shop that carries equipment for water sports (surfing, water skiing, wakeboarding, scuba, etc).

Ahh ok, thanks. Are there any good brands I should look into? Would a place like D*ck's Sporting Goods have it, or would I need to look at a specialty store? I'd ideally like to try it on at a store so I can see the fit...

eta: Do people wear this to swim in (if the water is cold)? We have a few water excursions when we go to the E. Caribbean this year too...

  • I don't think a sporting goods store would have it in the off season.  Try a dive shop.

You can swim in it, it's essentially a regular shirt that dries quickly and is snug enough not to flop around while in the water.  We sometimes where ours diving when the water temp doesn't necessitate a wet suite but it a bit chilly.  My husband wears his windsurfing to block the sun sometimes.

Like any good super hero, I'm using my alter ego to protect my identity. Goodbye Silver poster status!
  • Heck, even Target has them. They're starting to carry stuff like that now.

    Don't drink the water.

Yes Probably your best bet unless you happen to have a surf shop around. D?ck's website lists a few, but they're all short-sleeve.

  • Now that I know what kind of shirt it is, I was able to find many online. I'll just try to rely on reviews and go from there.

  • My local outdoor speciality shop carries these all year- some of us like to kayak even when it is cold out.  :)
