Is duct cleaning a sham? Or does it work? If you've had it done, did you notice a difference in allergies, etc?
Re: duct cleaning?
I don't have any solid facts on duct cleaning but FWIW, we've had a couple of AC people out to do routine maintenance over the past few years and both strongly advised against duct cleaning, saying it does more harm than good.
They did, though, both emphasize having ducts inspected and cared for to ensure they are able to work optimally. Ours, for example, are an older style and sit on the attic floor which makes them susceptible to cracking, making for poor air flow.
Like the pervious posts, we were told that the harm that could be done is that the company could puncture a hole in your airduct and that finding the hole would mean cutting holes in your ceiling until they found the damaged part of the duct.
Not worth it. We have dust and allergy problems and we are looking into an whole house HEPA system that attaches to your air conditioner and filters the air before it goes into the duct.
