duct cleaning?

Is duct cleaning a sham?  Or does it work?  If you've had it done, did you notice a difference in allergies, etc?

Re: duct cleaning?

  • I don't have any solid facts on duct cleaning but FWIW, we've had a couple of AC people out to do routine maintenance over the past few years and both strongly advised against duct cleaning, saying it does more harm than good.

They did, though, both emphasize having ducts inspected and cared for to ensure  they are able to work optimally. Ours, for example, are an older style and sit on the attic floor which makes them susceptible to cracking, making for poor air flow.

  • My husband is in the HVAC business, he does commercial not residential, but his opinion is generally that it's a sham and like PP said he wouldn't advise letting someone who's not knowledgeable about HVAC systems screw around with your duct work.  To improve air quality invest in better filters and change them more often.

  • There was an entire Dateline dedicated to duct cleaning scams.  However, we did have the ducts in our last home cleaned.  I did a lot of research and actually watch them put the brushes into the duct work.  The house was 1950's and the AC system was 20+ years old.  I watched them pull lots of dust and gunk out.  When we replaced the AC, we put in all new duct work.  Actual new ducts were not as expensive as I though they might be.
  • Like the pervious posts, we were told that the harm that could be done is that the company could puncture a hole in your airduct and that finding the hole would mean cutting holes in your ceiling until they found the damaged part of the duct.

Not worth it. We have dust and allergy problems and we are looking into an whole house HEPA system that attaches to your air conditioner and filters the air before it goes into the duct.
