Private vs Public School and anyone have kids in St. Stephens?

What are your thoughts on private vs public schooling? And do you plan on sending your kids to public or private and why? If money were no issue would that make a difference? Thanks

Re: Private vs Public School and anyone have kids in St. Stephens?

  • DH and I both want our kids to go to Catholic grade school and public high school. He went to OPS all his life. I went to Catholic grade school and OPS high school and loved it. I think it was great to have both experiences but we both want our kids in Catholic for at least grade school. I know money will be tight but it is completely worth it to me. Not to say there aren't great public schools in Omaha, but that is our choice.

I'm not too familiar with St Stephens since we grew up more East.

  • My DH and I will be sending our DD to private school. DH went to private school for most of his schooling but finished in a public high school. I went to public for all of my schooling. We prefer private over public (personal opinion(s)), but I'm sure there are great public schools as well. Money doesn't play a role in where we send our DD, we just want her to have the best education possible.

  • I currently know very little about the schools in Omaha-we come from a state that each town has 1 school, even our "city" only has 1 school, and there were 3 private high schools in the state.

DH went to a private school and really wants our kids to go to a private school for at least high school, probably elementary school as well. We would be open to prep/boarding school back East if it is what is best for our child.

Right now, we know we will be moving out of our current home before our kids are in school, so the next year will be spent looking into the private and public school Omaha has to offer and deciding where to move.

  • We like the thought of private- uniforms, much more parent involvement, etc.  We've even broached the subject of Catholic schools even though we aren't Catholic.

If we stay in our current home we may do public elem, but private middle/HS.

If money were no issue, we'd go private all the way and more than likely at Brownell Talbot.  I can't say enough good things about my nephew going there.  He's learning beyond what a normal public school would teach and the opportunities he's getting will help him in his future.

Ditto.  If money were no issue Brownell would be our #1.

I went to small town private school for 12 years and DH went to a LARGE public high school.  We both would love it if our kids could go to private schools but we have to balance that with the religious aspect.  I don't know if that's something I can be on board with but I might have to suck it up.  We will need to figure it out soon since neither of us want E going to the elem school in our neighborhood.

  • All of our boys went/go to Catholic grade school as did DH and I.  One of our boys switched over to public after a while, and we've had experience with Public and Catholic high schools as well.

I wouldn't necessarily say the education is better at one or the other, but I def. believe the experience is way different.  I honestly think the boys get/got a more diciplined experience, a more personal and community/family like atmosphere and of course the religious aspect of it all, in the catholic school.

I think the kids in our school are generally more respectful and caring because it's expected of them and they are taught those values and to act that way, not that kids in other school aren't also respectful, and not that we don't have some 'bad' kids in our school as well, but the majority of ours know what's expected of them on a daily basis, in and out of school.

Expense wasn't really an issue for as as we pay less for tuition then we did for daycare, and we had a pretty reasonable daycare provider.  If you're not used to having the added expense of kids in DC, then I could see where it would be an added expense you aren't used to.

I know people who have childrens at St Stephans and also friends of the older boys who went there.  I think it's a good school.  I knew the principal well before he left to go to Mt Michael (he was actual MY principal at the catholic grade school I went to and a parishioner of our parish) and he ran a good school.  It is the biggest/wealthiest Catholic Grade school in the state of Nebraska.

I agree with this. While I don't have a kid in public school, I have a bunch of friends that do. I think sometimes the public schools offer more choices/ electives, but there is a give and take for both I think. I also think some of the smaller public schools- Gretna, South Sarpy, even Aldrich Elem in Millard are great at making a community enviroment- lots of family nights, etc.

As far as cost, if one would like to think about a Catholic school and cost is a big consideration, there are a few parishes in town that are considered "stewardship schools." Tuition is less because the parents are required to put in a certain # of hours to make up the cost for having to pay staff, etc. There is also a different way that your tithing is used to make up for the tuition costs for school families. The school Maren attends is one of these.

This. I think you can still get a good education and their def are proper raised kids in public schools, but I know that most of my morals and values came from my private school education. Sometimes I felt we were a little sheltered but at the same time I know that the education I received shaped me into a better person. I also loved the family involvement in our parish and all the activities we had.

  • We will send our kids to public schools, and I am a public school teacher so of course I am biased.  The school I work at has incredibale parental involvment, diversity, and is an amazing school with some of the best teachers around.  I am sure private schools are great, but religious schools tend to be very traditional in their methods.  Which works for 90% of kids.  I tutored a little boy who went to a local private school.  He struggled a great deal and none of the curriculum was differentiated for him.  I finally told his mom to look into public schools (Westside) and now he is doing amazing at school because he is supported.
  • I always thought my kids would go to Catholic school, but over the past few years I've been more & more in disagreement with a lot of Catholic teachings, so we have decided to send them to public school. I was getting nervous my kids were going to be "indoctrinated" into a religion I'm not at all happy with. ;) So far we're very happy with his public school (Rockbrook). No/very little socioeconomic or racial diversity, but other than that we like it.

We toured Brownell & discussed it at length. There are some really outstanding qualities to that school but we just felt like it was a school full of "rich doctors' kids" (we say this jokingly b/c we are both doctors & practically everyone I know from work sends their kids there). We were just concerned that it would be lacking in "real world" experiences for them & sheltering them from some of the stressors that many/most people in the community may experience. In a way, that can be a good thing - teachers aren't distracted by dealing with their kid who hasn't eaten a meal since lunch yesterday, etc - but your kid grows up thinking everyone gets a Range Rover when they turn 16. I'm exaggerating, but we felt like there was some detriment to the fairly sheltered atmosphere there.

It was an amazing place, no doubt. Just didn't feel like the right fit for us.

Oh and I didn't want to pay 12K to send my kid to preschool. Seriously. 16K for a highschooler. :0
