Moving cars from VA to MD

We recently moved from VA to MD. We have two cars (we don't own them outright yet - still in the process of paying off the titles). We tried to call MVA to figure out how to register them here in Maryland, but all of the instructions are conflicting.

Has anyone dealt with this process in the past and can explain it to me?

Re: Moving cars from VA to MD

  • If I remember correctly (it's been many, many years) you need your registration and license (or everything that is required to get a license as well).  You need to have had your car inspected in MD (that's the real kicker) as well.  Then you get to stand in line for an eternity to probably be told that you forgot something.

Here's the webpage so double check my memory

  • I recently did that, though my car's paid off so I'm not sure what else you'll have to do with the lein.

     - Get MD insurance on the vehicles - the MVA will ask for your insurance number (though I just had to write it down, not show my card, so I'm not sure if they double-check or anything)
    - Get the vehicles inspected
    - Be prepared to pay a ton (ugh).  If you register within 60 days of moving to MD, they charge you the difference in the sales tax you would've paid in MD (6%) and the sales tax you actually paid (in VA it's 3%).  If you do it after 60 days, they'll charge you the entire 6%, regardless of what you already paid.  I wound up pay over $700 to register my vehicle because it's a 2010 and still worth a decent amount.  They charged me 3% on a value greater than what I paid for the car 18 months ago because their system says that's what the car's worth now.  I even had the bill of sale with me, showing what I paid, but it didn't matter.

    Good luck!

  • Ugh. I moved from MD to VA in 2005 and then from VA to MD in 2009, and both ways registering my vehicle and getting my new license was miserable.

When I transferred from VA to MD, I actually ended up having to go back to VA for something, so I spent the day at 3 DMV offices in 2 states. I think I cried.

  • They told us we can't do the registration in person and we have to fax something over to them? Is that correct?

We went to DMV today to update our licenses, brought in identification that matched their instructions, and then were told that they wanted (of course) something else and we had to leave.

In VA you pay a lower tax to buy the car, then you pay a yearly car tax.  In MD, you pay the difference in sales tax from a low sales tax state to their state and more aggressive registration fees and a very picky car inspection but there is no yearly car tax like there is in VA.
