lunch question

What do you usually eat for lunch?  I'm trying to spend less money on the over processed Lean Cuisines and WW meals.  Do you make more of a dinner so you have have left overs or do you buy things specifically for lunch?  Which do you find better for your budget?

Re: lunch question

  • I stopped eating those b/c they have a lot of sodium, but I do sometimes get the sesame chicken lean cuisine (they're so good!). I usually bring dinner leftovers or do a combination of these things:

    -yogurt
    -crackers/cheese
-trader joe's low sodium soups (they're really inexpensive and last for at least 3 lunches!)
    -apple/banana/other fruit
    -carrots/hummus/pita
    - greek yogurt + fruit + honey + granola

  • I make a bunch of soup and freeze them in lunch size portions. I also sometimes bring left overs from the previous night's dinner. If I don't do either of them I will usually bring a tuna fish or pb and jelly sandwich.

  • There is usually just enough left from dinner for me to take lunch and thankfully no one else in the house likes leftovers. If not that, I will bring a bag of salad and fixins and eat that a few days. I buy lunchmeat in the beginning of the week for myself and the boys and will have a sandwich with a piece of fruit. I also have a love for pb&j. I do keep a stock of healthy ones and lean cuicines that I get when on sale and take them when there is absolutely nothing else. My office orders out at least once a week, I dont participate every week, just occassionally. I feel like I blow through $10-$15 way too easily when we order out. And luckily my new office has no where too good within walking distance to splurge on. I used to be a block away from wawa, that was dangerous, I felt like I was in there twice a day sometimes

  • I know it's not good for you, but I love me some lunchmeat.  I eat a turkey and cheese sandwich on wheat almost every day.  I mix it up with the condiments:  mayo, mustard, or sometimes brie and organic raspberry jelly.

  • For a while I was doing yogurt and cheese-super cheap but not that filling!

I try to buy the frozen meals when they are on sale but I only bring them occasionally because I am not a huge fan of public microwaves.

I will do left over pasta or chicken but I pretty much draw the line there.

  • Lean Cuisines are not the best lunch, but they are convenient on days I'm running late so I try and keep a few in the freezer.  They are dirt cheap at Target.

At dinner, I put any leftovers in lunch-sized containers that night so that they are ready to grab-and-go in the morning. However, I don't normally double a dinner recipe unless it's something that reheats well (like white chicken chili, soup, stews).

Tuna is another back-up plan on days I'm running late.  I just grab a can, and mix it with olive oil/salt/pepper at work.  I'm probably not popular those days, but oh well!

I work right next to an Acme, and they have an awesome salad bar that's $4.99/lb.  I can usually keep it under $5 which is cheap for lunch in Bala Cynwyd.

  • I pack a salad and some type of sandwich - tuna/chicken salad on arnolds sandwich thins.

On Sunday I made a batch of turkey meatballs and packed 3 of them with a salad the past 2 days.

My NY resolution has been to pack a lunch at least 4x a week. Its a challenge some days but it is definately saving me money and I am eating more substantial meals than a measley LC.

  • My school provides lunch for us...and most days it's tolerable so I will eat it.  They always have soup and a salad bar so for the most part I rarely worry about bringing my own.  The only times I do is when I make soups or if we have leftovers from dinner that I know won't get eaten otherwise.

When I worked in corporate, I used to bring my lunch 4 days a week.  I would do leftovers if it was pasta or something else that would reheat well.  A lot of times I would buy fixings for salad on Sunday and prep a salad each night.  But lots of times I would make a lunchmeat sandwich, some fruit and pack a bag of doritos.  Super healthy, I know - but it kept me full and I didn't snack as much after lunch.

  • I bought this http://www.crock-pot.com/Product.aspx?cid=112&pid=10151 (thanks to cand on Pinterest) and have yet to bust it out yet.

I'm thinking this would make my entire lunch life a lot easier.

I still have yet to bite the bullet on this. Please let me know what you think once you use it.

  • I've had that pinned and keep going back and forth on buying it. Let me know what you think!

Do we know how long it takes to reheat?  I'm so curious.

  • I haven't used it yet but I will make a point to use it by the end of next week and report back.  What I'm concerned most about is smelling up the office.  Not that I'd be eating stinky food, but I just don't want to annoy anyof my coworkers.
  • I start everyday with 1 cup of oatmeal at my desk, so I'm not that hungry for lunch. I will sometimes bring leftovers (I just had pasta carbonara with broccoli); or I'll make a big batch of quinoa (high fiber!) on a Sunday night and add beans (black beans or chick peas), cherry tomatoes, scallions and add goat cheese or feta cheese for lunches throughout the week.    I have had yogurt and cheese for lunch, followed by an apple on the ride home before the gym.
  • I usually start the day with a pretzel.  We can blame Catholic school for that one.

For lunch, I usually bring a LC (yes, not very good for you) and a banana.  If we have leftovers (such as pasta), I will bring those.  I am very conscious of stinking up the office!  Once in a while, I will bring a sandwich with me.

I work in Old City and our building has a food court in it which is not that great.  It is very expensive, not to mention not very healthy, to eat up here.

  • LC isnt that bad for you. Yes, it is high in sodium. But as long as you dont have any bloodpressure problems, which I dont, its a better choice than being unprepaired and eating out every day.

Their main preservative is freezing...there are some stabalizers, but overall, it could be a lot worse.

I eat them most days for portion control, convenience and cost. (about $1.50 on sale.)

Otherwise I have a sandwich or soup or a hearty salad brought from home. I really try not to eat out.  Today was cheese steak day at work. UGH.  It's the first time I've had one in a year...they order them once a month and I finally caved.

  • we have never been a processed foods kind of folks.

i have no problem eating the samething for lunch, so i make something for the whole week.

  • im a fatty who pretty much wants a hot lunch everyday...and the fact that we have a bomb a** cafeteria in our building doesn't help...but once i realized what i was spending on breakfast and lunch i had to cut that sh!t out.  two weeks ago i picked a bunch of recipes from this site: http://onceamonthmom.com/menus/traditional/ for breakfast and lunch froze and labeled them and they've been fantastic!

  • I am a SAHM but most of my lunches are just heated in a microwave vs. actually made "fresh".

One thing that I've been making recently is burritos. They are super cheap and freeze well. I use a tortilla, fresh salsa, cheese, and a can of beans (either black or refried). I mix the salsa in with the can of beans, spread it out on a tortilla sprinkle on cheese then fold up. I then "pan crisp" them. (sometimes I add that precooked chicken to them) I make a whole batch at once (6-8) and then put them in a ziplock bag and freeze them. They are super quick to heat up in the microwave and taste delish.
