Dry? Hand help!!

OMG...my hands are on fire. They are red, cracked and sometimes bleed and they feel like the roughest sandpaper.  I thought it was dry hands, then I thought it was from gloves at work so I switched gloves. But then I wasn't convinced it was the first set of gloves so I went back to them. Now my hands hurt. I seriously can't even wash them (ok I do but I try to only do the palms cause it hurts so bad). Has anyone had something like this before? Is it just a case of extremely dry skin? My SIL thought maybe a chemical reaction so now I'm wondering about the gloves (they are Nitrile gloves at work the other ones I was using are vinyl). I've used lotion but am not very good at putting it on throughout the day. I also tried CJ's Butter at night as well as Vaseline and put gloves on. Even with that on overnight, in the morning it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Re: Dry? Hand help!!

  • Try taking a small bottle of dove or ivory soap with you to work instead of the work soap. I work in the medical field and we have a bottle of ivory by the sink and I only use that and it helps me anyways. The alcohol sanitizer kills my hands too..

  • Watch for an infection as well.  The back of DH's hands got so bad about 6 years ago (extremely dry, cracking, bleeding, scabbing) that he had to see a dermatologist and be treated not only for the dry skin but for an infection from it as well.

It was rough but it cleared up really quickly.  If it doesn't clear up soon I'd start looking into an Rx cream.

  • My hands are so bad right now!  I feel like I am scratching the kids when I touch their skin.  I started using gloves to wash dishes that don't go in the dishwasher and house work, this has helped a little.  I also lather up at night before bed.  Sorry, no real advise, I feel your pain though.
  • I would see a dermatologist for this.
  • I had this all winter long, every year when I was a kid. I found that drinking tons of water helps. The best stuff that helped was Mary Kay Satin Hands. Vaseline intensive care that says soothing or calming helped the most.

  • Are the gloves powdered?  That powder can cause a nasty rash.  Also, carry (unscented, sensitive skin) lotion with you everywhere and put it on immediately after washing your hands every single time.  Like before your skin is completely dry.

  • Might be contact dermatitis from the gloves, but I would work on treating the dryness first & see how things go.

Avoid the hand sanitizer, it's incredibly drying (so is washing, but not quite as horrible).

I second the notion of finding a gentler soap if you can - that industrial stuff is made of sandpaper, alcohol, and rusty nails, I swear.

Put a bottle of lotion in your pocket, literally, and slather it on immediately after washing your hands. Every. Single. Time. I use Vaseline Deep Moisture creamy formula. It is cheap & seems protective.

At night, slather your hands in Aquaphor & put socks on them. Feels gross but helps a lot.

    Good luck.

  • My hospital's Employee Health gives us Cetaphil when we show up with red/cracked/dry hands. Worth a shot. Also, beware that some potions are not compatible with latex gloves (i know you said you're using nitrile & the vinyl lunch-lady gloves) or soaps with CHG bases. The lotion can inactivate the CHG, just FYI. Good luck, painful hands & washing a bajillion times each day is no fun. Sometimes the only thing that helps me is a couple days off work :)

  • Thanks for all the info! THe soap at work really isn't any different than what I use at home (I work in a house so they use just regular liquid hand soap too), there is no powder on the gloves, it does seem to get worse when water gets in the gloves (like when I'm giving a shower and water runs down my arm into it). I think I am going to make an appt with my doc. THey hurt so bad right now to even do anything and brush against them hurts so bad, and the one is warm to touch. So I'm going to see if there is something good they can give me to help. I have 2 more nights then off for the weekend so hopefully some cream and a couple days off helps!!
