I will try to make this brief because its very involved.
I work a FT job (Job #1) that a really don't like, but it pays the bills and provides much needed health insurance. Right after I work there, I go to Job #2, a part time job with a small local agriculture company. This the the job I am passionate about and have a bachelor's degree in this industry. I cannot work there full time because it just wouldn't pay as much as Job #1, doesn't have benefits and cannot guaruntee 40 hrs/wk.
About a year ago, I asked my boss at Job #2 to help me learn more so I can use the experience to get a better job in that industry. He was thrilled to help and for a while worked one on one with me to teach me things. But then we got very busy and didn't have time. Plus, my hours at Job #1 changed slightly, so now I go to Job #2 30 mins late everyday (they don't mind). This limits the amount of time I am there and so I don't get to learn new things. Also, they have some people working there FT who end up doing all the things I need to learn to do. Then I also get mad because I get bossed around by the people who work more hours, but have not been at the company as long. ![]()
So, in short, my FT job that I hate is in the way of me learning things at my PT job that pertain to my career. Any suggestions as to how to continue to learn things there even though there is very little time for anyone to teach me?
Re: FT job is in the way of PT job/career
Can your SO/DH carry the insurance?
Can you downshift to PT at Job 1 so you have more time at Job 2?
It also may help to change your attitude about getting mad at FT people. It's not their fault you can't be there FT. And just because they haven't been there as long doesn't mean they don't know more than you do.
Are there other jobs similar to #2 that you could take with better hours/$/benefits?

No, my FI doesn't get insurance, and Job #1 does not allow PT.
I know the FT people at #2 have experience and I learn things from them. But I have been there 2 years and have people who have been there 2 months and are the same position I am trying to tell me how to do my job (I'm talking about things I already know how to do, not new stuff, or they order me around like they own the place because I am not there 8-10 hours like they are). But thats not the point. I am kind of bummed out because I was all lined up to do so many things that are important to my career and this industry and as soon as I start getting somewhere, it gets pushed aside because I can't be there as much. For example, there was a task that my boss gave to me and just me. He did that so I could learn how to do it for future use. He would put my name on the paperwork that went with it, and often praised my skill. But we hit a busy point in the year and out of nowhere he opened this task to everyone and began paying people a bonus for doing it. So now everyday I come in and its done already. I don't get to sharpen my skill at it, and I don't even care about the bonus. I'd do it for free just so I knew how to do it!
I have applied to other jobs like #2 in the past, but don't ever hear anything back. I am not sure if I am underqual'd or what. I just don't know what to do to get more experience when I can't get there any sooner!
