Feed Me!

I haven't bought groceries this month in an attempt to clean out the back of the freezer and the pantry.

Well. We succeeded! According to Jenny#'s site my breakfast is sh!t!

My frozen fruit is okay (B+) but I need more food!

Suggestions? (Preferably freezable and inexpensive)

OH- I eat at work, so normal kitchen isn't available.

Re: Feed Me!

  • Freezable, inexpensive? Frozen vegetables like broccoli, greens, green beans, etc. At my Whole Foods you can buy frozen kale, chard and collard greens.

Sprouted whole grain bread- you can freeze it and it will last forever.

Eggs (if you like them)- they'll last forever, are inexpensive (even if you buy the really high quality, pastured-raised hens ones, they still end up at like, 50 cents an egg)

And actually, right there you have a well balanced, cheap meal- sprouted bread, an egg and some greens- lol! Done.

Pantry items: Buy in bulk and you'll save money- canned and dried beans, legumes, brown and/or wild rice, whole grain pasta, quoina, etc.

  • I find that a well organized fridge, freezer and pantry make shopping much easier and less expensive because you know exactly what you need.  Making meal plans is also helpful, but I couldn't keep it up.

We also buy tons of frozen veggies because they are delicious and economical.

  • Thanks Apples! I never thought about having greens for breakfast (They are usually my lunch). What can you do with Kale? Can you mix it with a scrambled egg?

Ang - they are both well organized, but we had a bad habit of buying food and not "fronting" so we had older stuff in the back that wasn't getting eaten, so I just procrastinated buying foods until we ate some.

  • I always have greens with my breakfast if I'm at home. I just do them on a side as a steamed veggie and sometimes I'll drizzle a bit of agave on top just to sweeten them up. I'm sure you could mix them with an egg.

  • Sometimes I'll make myself a breakfast sandwich: toasted whole wheat english muffin w/ scrambled egg and wilted spinach with some feta cheese.  Instead of an english muffin, you can also use a pita pocket or a wrap.
