I love my son and had a great pregnancy but...
I'm not interested in becoming pregnant again anytime soon....maybe another 2 years or so, but definitely not any sooner.
So I'm thinking I should start thinking about birth control. I haven't taken any birth control for about 10 years. DH has been in charge of that and we have always just been careful (well except the one time back in March obviously. LOL) I'm pretty clueless about birth control. I used to take the pill and a long time ago I used to take Depo (which I hated).
Anyone care to recommend their birth control?
Re: I love my son and had a great pregnancy but...
I just got the Mirena. No complaints so far-- doesn't hurt (had minimal cramping at first but did not hurt at insertion). I've had it for a week now.
It's good for up to 5 years but can be removed at any point.
Before my first pg and after I was done bf'ing I was on ortho tri cyclen lo. During bf'ing they had me on the mini pill which was fine. I have issues with menstrual migraines and the ortho lo was the only pill that seemed to work well for me. I had considered an IUD as well but decided against it.
We are done after this baby so and have been talking with my dr about options, for now the plan is that DH will be getting a vasectomy (unless I end up needing a c-section and would get my tubes tied at the same time.)
I have had a very good experience with Ortho Novum. The progesterone in Mirena, Ortho Tri (& Ortho Tri Lo) didn't agree with me. The different type in the Ortho Novum did.
Whatever you start with, my biggest rec isn't a product itself but that you should be your own advocate if what you start with isn't agreeing with your body!! Don't be afraid to tell the doc you NEED to try something different.
I agree! When I went off the mini pill they had me on some generic version of Ortho Lo and it just did not agree with me. I called and asked to go back to what I knew would work for me, even if it meant more $.
Another vote for Mirena. Got mine ~10 weeks post partum, and haven't looked back since. LOVE IT. I've had zero side effects - BCP made me have allergic reactions to a lot of things: dust mites, the sun, ibuprofen, etc.
My MW highly recommended it over Paraguard, which can make your periods heavier. I haven't had a period yet, but that may be from BFing also. Two of my coworkers have had issues with Mirena, though - weird hormonal b!tchy stuff, but no periods.
If you decide to go the IUD route, be sure to check with your insurance. My last job's wouldn't cover it, and they're very expensive ($1000+). My current job's insurance covers it and the insertion 100%.
My Wedding Bio! Not updated in a LONG time!
I was on Yaz for years before going off of it to try out temping/charting, which has worked out really well. I know Yaz gets a bad rap - I don't know anyone personally who had issues, though I do think I have less anxiety now that I'm not on it (which was something I dealt with before every going on it.) I'm seriously considering an IUD once we've had our first child.
I definitely agree with PP - I was on Estropstep (BCP) at first and had a horrible experience and my doctor at the time seemed to blow off my concerns - I had gained some weight while on it and my boobs hurt all the time - and she basically told me she didn't see either of those as a real problem. I finally just said I'm done taking this one, what else can I try? And was sooo much happier. Clearly, part of the issue was my doctor in this case, but I'm happy I took the initiative to try out something else. There are so many options now!
I LOVED my Mirena. Can't say enough great things about it. Of course, I know a couple women who hated it. But that was also true with the Depo shot and the various forms of the pill-- both of which did not work so well for me.
But the Mirena was very good to me-- all 4 years and 10 months of it.
I have the Paraguard IUD and so far, so good! My periods are heavier but they're shorter, which is odd...I love that there are no hormones in it, and it's good for 10 years (vs. Mirena is good for 5 years). That way I'll be 41 when I have to decide another BC method, so I'll be at/near the end of my reproductive years
). I'm a loony toon when I have any extra hormones in my body, plus I'm bfing so that's why I decided to go hormone-free. My insurance covered it 100% so I'm really happy with that!
I was terrified for the insertion but it was a breeze since I was 6 weeks pp. I had a little cramping/period-like bleeding after for a few days and then it was done and I had no issues. I highly recommend an IUD!

This!
Other than that I was on the Nuva Ring, once a month it was really easy, however I do so bad on hormonal BC's I had to go off it, I've run the gamut of every BC possible, so far the Mirena has been the best option for me.
