If you haven't already, check out the stupidity that is kgettingmarried on saraandmichael's pre-paid college thread.
I'm embarrassed to reside in the same state as her, lest others think anyone from Minnesota is that stupid. I'd link but I'm lazy and I'm leaving. It's still on the first page.
Oh, FFS.

And yeah, it's a pretty hilarious post. Hilariously infuriating.
I had the same thought so I looked it up. At least for Florida it says it will pay the market equivalent of Florida's tuition. So if you lock in a plan that will pay for a university in Florida in 10 years and your kid ends up going to Michigan, the plan will pay Michigan the amount they would charge in staters that year. I hope I explained that right.
Thanks I get it...I think...We haven't started down the road towards kids just yet so we haven't looked into that stuff but we always planned on saving and investing for college. There is always the hope for scholarships...
Thanks for putting in the link, I was just about to shut down for the night at work when I finished reading that post.
Monterey Bride was awesome in that post.
I do not know, although this one claims to hail from my home state.
MontereyBride just used your siggy quote as I was typing this. Ha
Holy crap.
BTW, what happens to your money if you decide to unenroll your kid somewhere between now and his/her senior year in hs?
College prices are outrageous. We paid $75-$90 a credit hour and that was one of the most expensive per-credt hour prices in the state. Now it's $120 for the sh!tty community college our county runs.
I believe (based on the info provided in that post so don't take it as fact), for the prepaid type thibg that the OP was talking about, you get the money back. In a 529 savings plan, there's a hefty tax penalty if the kid doesn't go to college.
I can't fathom what college will cost in 20ish years from now when my kids go to school. It scares me a little!
I love that a admitted HOT AZZ WRECK is the person who's telling us all about what it does or does not take to be successful in life.
kgettingmarried- you've officially been written off by imoan.
Currently Reading: Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes
College tuition scares me. I wish that Wisconsin had a pre-paid tuition program. I would have been all over that (provided I could have afforded it). This is the first that I've ever even heard of it.
It stresses me out!
I can't believe I read all that.
We're planning to pre-pay for two years of in-state tuition and two years of community college for our kids (Virginia has a great community colleges and guaranteed admission to some fantastic schools if you meet certain requirements in community college). I'm pretty sure our kids will still be better off than kgettingmarried.
July 3rd, 2012 ~ Hang in there sweetheart, we can't wait to meet you!
