Getting to know your orthopedic surgeon (Long)

Or more likely single handedly paying for a year of their child's schooling...that is what I will be doing over the next couple of days. (Well, not me specifically, but my family.)

So back in September, my mom had a partial knee replacement surgery, which went exceptionally well. She has a full replacement on the other one on Tuesday. So here is hoping everything goes well.

And the more pressing issue, my husband is going to see the same doc today, to go over the results from his MRI that he had on Friday. He was riding a dirt bike back on the 16th of December, put it down, and has had immense pain in his left leg since. He has been to the ER docs (everything is fine, just put it in this imbolizer), his GP (hmm...your ACL could be torn, go get an MRI), the orthopedic surgeon's PA (looks okay, don't worry about the brace, come back in 2 weeks if you are still in pain.)

He fought getting the MRI because he is very anti-radiation, and was convinced that he was fine...finally he realized that the pain was not actually going away, and in face was actually getting worse. So finally on Tuesday, he scheduled an appointment to get it done. We went Wednesday to have that done. Within an hour of leaving the place, the GP called back, saying torn ACL, torn MCL, torn Meniscus (sp?), and a fracture in his femar. So today, we go to the orthopedic surgeon to figure out the next steps...

I am trying not to freak out at the moment, but it's rather bleak news...so I guess we will see...I'm just glad we have found a really good Orthopedic Surgeon, who we trust, and he uses surgery as an absolute last resort.

No real point to this, I just needed to get it all out. Thanks for reading if you are still here. :)

Re: Getting to know your orthopedic surgeon (Long)

  • Wow, that sucks. I hope they figure something out soon so he doesn't have to be in such pain. I can't believe the one doc just said not to move it - like that will help!

My H has to have shoulder surgery after injuring the rotator cuff in a motorcycle accident. That happened like 7 years ago and he still hasn't had surgery. I have a feeling it will cost us a buttload when he finally does it.

  • Ugh, that really sucks. :-( If it helps at all, MH has had an MCL and medial meniscus tear and now has no problems at all, and only a teeny-tiny scar.

Yeah, we are looking at it as "well, if he has to have surgery, at least it will get the deductibke out of the way for the year...it will probably just be a huge chunck up front.

That's good to know, and does help. His biggest concern right now is whether or not he will be able to play soccer again, once it's all said and done. My biggest concern is that he will be able to walk again without pain or limping. Yay for priorities. :D

  • That is a lot of stuff to deal with.
  • Your H sounds like my dad : He tore his medial meniscus a few years ago and they repaired the tear. Minimal scar.

Now he's either having surgery on the 13th or the 20th to repair another tear, scope out arthritis and pop a cyst in his knee.

Were these caused from the first tear?

  • Sorry mine is a little long! I feel for you!

OUCH!!!! I bet you fell the same way my husband did..... inhale and went eeeeeekkkkkk. I went out to go meet him as he was walking the dogs...he lets the male go to run to me and lo and behold, my 90 lb Boxer doesnt remember how to stop. I flew in the air and was so embarrased cause it was in the middle of an apartment complex and I felt for sure everyone watched...then I kept saying I was fine and tried to put weight on the leg..not happening..husband says lets go to hospital..i say carry me up three flights of stairs I have to throw up. needless to say I finally said ok lets go to hospital only because my first day at a new job was in 13 hours.

Depressed tibial plateau fracture, blown out ACL, medial meniscus flaying, and lateral meniscus bubbled over the fracture point. Non weight bearing for 3 months....could not pick up and carry anything...right leg..could not drive. lived on 3rd floor apartment..no yard for dogs. LOVE my husband for everything he had to do to take care of me!!!

Then this year in June I got a text from my husband... blew out my knee..ambulance on the way to take me to hospital. His was only an ACL reconstruction so he was much more mobile than me...but I did get to kinda pay him back by helping him!

Now I am 18 weeks pregnant and have a brand new meniscus tear which will need surgery after I have our little girl.... here we go again lol :)

Sorry this is sooooo long but I totally feel for you and it is a HUGE thing and I hope it only strengthens your love for each other!
