Dr / Parent Re

So a couple of weeks ago*, Connor started having accidents both at night and during the day. Pretty much every day for the last three weeks, he's peed himself at least once, sometimes more. This is after being completely potty trained and not even wearing pull ups to bed.  This morning about 5 am he had an accident. I sent him to the bathroom and when he peed some more he complained that it hurt.

*Around that time he started taking lamisil for toenail fungus, but the doctor assured me the two were unrelated when I called a few days ago.

So what's going on here? Is my kid just torturing me by pissing all over himself? (I know this embarrasses him because he tries to hide it). Does he have a UTI?  I'm at my wits end here.

Re: Dr / Parent Re

  • Do you think he's crying wolf about it hurting?   Is he peeing a lot when he does go? I'd just take him in to the Dr. to be sure.

  • Sounds like an UTI.  I'd take him in.

  • It was only a little bit when he said it hurt (but he had obviously peed the bed before that so its not like he started with a full tank). It's definitely possible that he made up that it hurt, but when I put him back to bed after getting everything cleaned up, he was still telling me it hurt, so I'm inclined to believe it? I've also noticed him grabbing himself a few times lately, which is out of the norm.
  • My guess would be UTI, I'd talk to the doc about it.

  • Yeah, hurts usually means UTI.  If you have a Minute Clinic in CVS, they can run a quick pee test, if you don't want to deal with dragging him to the doctor.

  • We went to the doctor, and left with no real answers.  The doctor said he might be constipated (even though he poops daily) or perhaps the tip of his peen is irritated. He said we could put vaseline on it for a few days to see if that helps. Indifferent I know how that story gets re-told at daycare.  Yikes.

ETA: He didn't actually say if they tested for UTI and got a negative, but he did mention protein in his urine and that they could send it off to the lab for testing, but weren't going to do that just yet.

  • If its not medical, I have a little worry combined with your story about J's comments the other day that there could be a little emotional/acting out thing going on? Maggie tends to hold pee and refuse the potty as a way to exert control. Though the time of day hes doing it makes me think it's more of a physical thing.

  • Yeah, even though it was happening both during the day and at night, I assumed it was psychological in nature until he said it hurt to pee.  In fact, he said there were spikes in his wiener, so I thought that warranted a trip to the doctor.

I hate that you leave the doctor with no real idea of what's wrong always.

  • Ow! Poor Connor. I would have taken him too, that's pretty descriptive.

  • I would have taken him, no question. Poor kiddo.
