My husband and I are looking into going to Atlantis in the Bahamas mid-August. After doing some research, it looks like we would choose to stay at The Cove and get The Cove dining package. Does anyone have any experience/suggestions about where to stay, dining, opinions, or general information that would be helpful to us? TIA!!

Re: Atlantis Vacation
Honestly - DH and I stayed at the Atlantis (in a very large suite, no less) and we both HATED it. We'd never go back (it was a shame because I'd been to the Atlantis years ago and loved it).
Truthfully, the place is just so commercialized and crammed full of people that it isn't any fun, IMO. We sat on the balcony of our suite and looked down at people who had paid (what I can only imagine is) an exorbitant amount of money to snorkel in one of the fish tanks - it's that focused on making $$$.
If you go, staying at the Cove might be better, but I just wouldn't go back there. If I were to go somewhere in the Caribbean, I'd go to the Cayman Islands - there's more to do there, you can go off-resort, and with the prices the Atlantis charges for everything, you shouldn't find the Caymans any more expensive. Just my opinion.
I've been to the Atlantis two times. The first was in 1998 and it was nice. It was just starting to expand to what it is today. The 2nd time was in 2005 and it wasnt as much fun. It is very expensive and honestly, not worth it. It is highly over rated.
The only reason I went back the 2nd time is because my DH hadnt been there.
I have not been to Atlantis but based on friends experiences there, i would never ever go there. it is very over priced and no i have talked too had the vacation they wanted.
This was exactly it for me, too! I had been telling DH it was one of my favorite places my family had vacationed (but the first time we went it was before it got HUGE - it was still a major rip-off) and I took him back and he was so underwhelmed. Thankfully work paid for most of the trip (we got a "travel bonus") so it wasn't my money I wasted... but still, it wasn't any good, the service was horrible, and it was way overpriced.
If I were to stack-rank the islands I've been to in the Caribbean:
1. Grand Cayman - most expensive but the nicest by far; very safe, great snorkeling (and SCUBA if you're into that), fun excursions
2. BVI - I like the BVI more than the USVI, but both are gorgeous
3. Puerto Rico - lots to see / do around San Juan and you could always hop over to Vieques if you want to really get away (if you go here, the rainforest is beautiful and I hear the bioluminescent kayaking is awesome)
4. Aruba - pretty island, relatively safe
5. Jamaica - I loved this island but it has super gone downhill - I've been three times and the last time I was there I felt totally sketched out when I ventured off the resort. If all you want to do is hang out at a resort, though (or do guided tours booked through the resort), it's awesome (people are super friendly, Dunn's River Falls is fun, etc.).
6. Barbados - pretty island but I don't remember that much to do on it
7. Bahamas - the islands are pretty, I just wouldn't waste my money on The Atlantis. Also Nassau is really sketch.
8. Martinique - I thought it was kind of blah.
9. Dominican Republic - granted we didn't go to P*nta Cana which is where all the honeymooners seem to go and where all the big AI's are, but we stayed in a crazy nice villa in the Samana Peninsula. Just didn't feel really safe when we left the villa, there were constant power outages, one day the water went out for about 7 hours, and I got eaten alive by mosquitoes. I would bet many of the challenges I dealt with would not be an issue at the resorts, so they may be a great option. The island is very pretty.
HTH!
