Mutual

My husband is in the Coast Guard. We've only been married for two months, so I'm still trying to figure out how military life works. He is looking to mutual to another station so that we can live closer to one another. I was just wondering if there are any other military wives whose husbands were successful with a mutual? I'm just wondering if there is any chance that a mutual would ever happen. He's posted an add on the Coast Guard mutual board, but I just wanted to know if anyone has every experienced a mutual. Any input is helpful, and I apologize if there is already a thread on this topic.

Best!

Re: Mutual

  • Is there another term for that or is it CG specific? I just haven't heard of it before. I did want to say good luck and welcome!

I think she's talking about two people mutually agreeing to swap stations and assignments. There is a more well-known term for it but I can't remember it either. The only thing I know about it is that the people who agree must be the same rank and in the exact same position, just at another base. Then it's subject to commander approval.

  • Just out of curiosity - what's preventing you from moving to be with him? Are you also AD?

  • I'm in the USCG as well (married member-to-member) and I mutualed here to be with my then-FI (now H) back in 2009.

Did your H post his mutual ad on Fred's Place? That's where I found mine (I was in Kodiak and swapped for Miami - don't even get me started on how lucky I was with that find).

I've seen many mutuals executed successfully, but you have to be very, very sure you want to do this, since you'll be paying for everything out of pocket. If you have more questions, check out Chapter 1.B.10 of the CG Military Assignment and Authorized Absences Manual: http://www.uscg.mil/directives/cim/1000-1999/CIM_1000_8.pdf

If you have more questions, I can help.

  • It's so uplifting to hear of someone who has actually found someone to mutual with! Do you mind me asking how long you searched for a mutual on fredsplace before you found someone? Any helpful info is much appreciated! :)
  • I'm one of the lucky ones who heard from someone within 72 hours of posting on Fred's Place. I'm a YN though, so there are tons of places I can go, but I've seen people in other more specified rates that it can take longer (ME, AMT, AET, IT, etc).
